Minnesota!

I have found my best defense against frozen eggs is a cochin hen or a hen with a lot of cochin in the mix. I have a couple that will sit all day on the eggs and I collect them nice and warm when I get home from work. My fav hen is the best broody cochin mutt and she keeps the eggs from freezing in my breeding pen.

On another note, DH convinced M to get bantam far Cornish this year to try as bantam meaties. Chicks arrive in 2 weeks.

its tooooo coooollllllld! dang it, I have some new pullets laying and you know how exciting that is - and the eggs are
cracked gol dang it!

Yesterday got seven eggs and 6 were cracked open before I could get home to get them. I guess I should focus on the positive and just be happy laying is starting to gear up.

When it gets this cold, there is a huge drop in the amount of feed being consumed. This makes no sense to me, shouldn't they want more food for fuel in their bodies? And it has never been true any other of the 15 or so winters I've had chickens. but this is the second time this winter when a big amount of feed is left uneaten at the end of the day.

Minniechickmama,....it sounds like you have found buckeyes to be a good dual purpose bird but you will still choose to order cornish x for your meat birds? so maybe the buckeyes cockerals might be meat...? do I have that right?

LaLa: I find when it's extra cold out they snuggle up on the roost and keep their feet warm. Pop down for a bite to eat in turns. But yah...it does make sense that they would need more fuel. IJDK...

Cold snap will be over soon...I hope.

15 Chicken Pile up in Feed Room!

I have a small feed room I need to enter in my coop before entering the chicken area. The Chickens stand and wait for me to come into their area to open the chicken door. When I do they rush out the human door through the feed room and outside.

Today they all ran out, and stopped , again, scared to go any further. An inch of snow stopped froze them in place. Most of the snow occurred yesterday and they were out in it all day. They did not go in until 90% of the snow had fallen...

I had to actually push some of them out the door. It never fails to amaze me how they react to snow, even if they should be use to it.

They surely give us chuckles everyday don't they. I'm hoping my Buckeye will start her POL. The Roo was trying to chase her down today. She was a late hatch bird --late May-- so anticipating her egg any day. She's FAST. Poor Rog...
