Minnesota!

I am back,
I survived Togo and Makinin both.

I did get stuck at the Togo Bar for an hour or so, but I found my way out..

I am suddenly Guinea fowl rich. MY BA hen has 10 babies and is she ever a protective mother. I looked in on her when I got home and she puffed up clucked like crazy and kicked the wood chips and chick feed all over the pen, until I left. I also have 4 in the incubator, I am down to 2 incubators now and will be done to 1 shortly, by mid month none!

I even have a turkey egg to eat. One of the hens laid one in a chicken nest today. I love turkey egg scramble!

During Chicken/Beer feeding time, I had a little Creamette come over, she is the cutest chick, she has a crest that looks like Lyle Lovatts hair.

And just for you Holm, I have a new Mom Story.

The guineas hatched while I was stationed in Togo for 2 nights. My DW and my Mother checked on them and found the babies. I use a plastic milk jug case on it's side with board on the bottom to hold the eggs and nest together. The one the hen was in happened to have "lattice" work on the sides.

When they were there one of the babies got scared and put its head in the lattice work. They talked about it and hoped it would not "hang" itself, as in Minnie's conversation. Later that evening my wife went back to check on them again, my Mother saw her and went to check too.

This is the conversation as I get it. I should mention there was a piece of duct tape over one square/diamond of lattice.

DW: Why is that tape in the nest?

Mom: to keep the babies from choking themselves..

DW: why is it only on the one square?

Mom: Because that is the square I saw the chick stuck in...
You need to compile all these stories into a book. You ARE sitting on a gold mine!

Holy COLD day today. Perfect day to make a batch of rhubarb jam

Speaking of rhubarb

We seem to have wild rhubarb growing all around our place. Is it safe to harvest and use the stems? I know not to eat the leaves. And on another rabbit trail what are the leaves good for if they can't be eaten..

See this is why I have to limit my online time.... my mind is skipping like Peter Rabbit

Hey there all!

Stupid newbie question. How old are 'week old chicks' if they are actually doing wing practice, able to 'fly' up to the top of the rubbermaid container -- and apparently out of the container and back in? My sister (in GA) thinks they were closer to 3 weeks old. I've got 8 - 2 lavender orpington, 1 silkie, 1 I have not a clue, and 4 that are aracauna/wyandotte mixes

Said container now has a chicken wire cover over it but they are bouncing and launching like Tigger with turbo springs. Got them last week and they were supposed to be a week old, save 1 who was maybe a few days older.

Also picking them up daily, sometimes multiple times, to gentle/tame them. Any suggestions? Waste of time? I talk to them all the time I'm cleaning their housing - and there are a couple that will cock their heads and eyeball me - so I know they are making a connection that the pink large hairless monstrosity looming over them is actually okay. I hold them in one hand and massage under their wings with fingers of opposite hand. Also rub their tummys. Hope I'm not setting myself up for defeat - just want them people friendly.

We had a chicken just show up at my Momma's (AL) a decade ago. Named her Penelope. My niece was 11 or 12 at the time. That bird was ruirnt. She would come in the house and visit - never did poop inside. Beat all I ever seen. She would even ride the lawn tractor while the lawn was being mowed. Hold the bird in one hand and drive with the other. Learned tricks too. Annie would bring her inside and she'd be perched on her forearm. 'Penelope play dead!' God as my witness that chicken would 'fall' over backwards and hang off my niece's arm. Somewhere we've got it on video.....

Ralphie - Ole' and Lena say hello! I need to get some updated pics

That's a good old John Deere! LOL. They never depreciate (much) and you can count on them for years. Mowers--> the decks float and create lawn heaven...no scuffed marks. I married into an Allis family myself. But my husband got himself out of lawnmowing when I told him if he bought a John Deere rider he wouldn't have to mow the yard any more. I do believe that was the fastest purchase I ever seen him make for me.

He whisked me over to Jim Hennen at the dealership in st. cloud and I was riding green. Still have it 17 years later.
Atta Boy Holm! Can't wait to see your awesome tractor pictures. Now I guess I should dig up some old farm photos too from back in the day.

John Deere made a tractor? Really? When?

I know they made a plow and a cultivator but I thought everything else they tried to make rusted away or broke. I know they had a loud contraption that smoked a lot, bellowed smoke and scared animals with it's backfiring. I heard a few even moved under their own power, but the majority could be found on the end of a chain behind Red Tractor.

If you have what I think you have DO NOT EAT IT.

Make sure it is really rhubarb. I have never heard of wild rhubarb.
