Minnesota!

I know it is for the best, BUT I really miss the little guy this morning.    He is the sweetest poult I have had hatched all year.  I was ready to have my DW make a turkey Diaper for him so he could spend the winter indoors with us..

My turkeys all get lots of attention, most more than they want.  I know this will be hard to believe, but I have very spoiled birds. Even my CX's are spoiled.

The only one not spoiled is Cookies Dad, he refuses to let me pick him up.

BTW my day is not going to be good either, I have to go to suburbia and spend the day with City folks.....gag me with a spoon!

Just an update on the turkey poult. Cookie is doing great. We went for walks in the backyard today so they can peck at the grass and get some excercise. Thanks for new baby. If you want some peachicks the first one is free. I'll let you know when/if they hatch.

Colleensstuff Cookie is as cute as he was the last time I saw him/her!

Last night when we were outside with cookie it ate a huge fly. two swallows and it was gone....

Cookie also liked eating and pecking at grass. I miss him, but am so glad to see he has a friend. No bird should grow up alone.. BTW Did he watch Suits last night? I promised him he could..

Thanks for the pics!

We talk about how batcrap crazy guineas are. BUT what do call a BA hen that adopts 20 guineas as her babies...

This is the hen that refused to break broodiness, after our bath even, I threw her in the pen with the guineas after the hen that hatched 8 them decided to leave them. ( the other 12 I just had in the same pen.. This hen took all 20 as hers. She has even fought off an adult guinea that thought he should join the group. As you can see she has keets of differing ages.

They all listen to her, even the old ones that have their heads turning white.

Way off the topic...

I need to know if my family is the only one that uses or used the phrase " Scare the pants off you" Or "scared the pants off me"...

Such as I rolled the tractor on the hillside and it darn near scared the pants off me..

I bet it scared the pants off you when that bear growled......

We have always used it. MY grandpa used it all the time with us kids, I think it was a nice way of saying "pooped my pants" (and I do not mean the word poop)
Yes, we use these phrases. You are not the only weirdo.

I lost an austrolorp today. Assuming it is from the heat. Just found her laying right next to the coop. No feathers or foul play no blood. I counted the chickens in the coop probably a dozen times to make sure I had them all. Too bad.
So besides making sure they have fresh cool water *which we change during the day often* what else can we do to combat the heat stress? What does everyone do for their flocks to mange them during these hot stretches? Yes, they have shade too. What else can I do for them?

Rhett I cannot help you on your question, BUT thanks for answering mine.

I went to another thread and made mention that if I listed all my aches and pains it would scare the pants off you. I was immediately jumped on and my post was pulled for being vulgar, I am guessing...

Teach me to go to another thread...

They mentioned how inappropriate the phrase was as if it was some kind of sexual defiant thing. I was dumbfounded. I unsubscribed and came running back here to home ,never to leave again....

I have been running a sprinkler for my birds....so maybe I do have a suggestion. They seem to ike either sitting in it or near it. It is a misting sprinkler.

I was wondering if I should do the sprinkler or not. Didn't know if I should get them wet or not. Didn't want to shock them to death by cold water either. :) And no I don't mean standing over top of them spraying the pants off them either. Really?? they told you that was inappropriate?? I cannot believe how ridiculous that is. Really!! I have seen tons of stuff with people getting into fights and all kinds of rude things are said. But what you said how you said it is vulgar? I think not. I guess you will just have to stay with us. We will keep you!! And glad to have you in fact!! Sorry other people can be so ______________________________________frustrating.

My chickens started laying about a week or so ago! I was so excited to get those first eggs! Now my issue is that they are laying all over. Some lay in the coop, others in the shed, others randomly in the yard, others hide their nests. I've tried locking them in the coop, but they wait to lay until I let them out. So now we need to get the run finished so they have access to run and coop and I will start letting them free range around noon or so. The coop is too small (and hot) to keep them locked up for that long.

Sometimes it helps to salt the nests with fake eggs. These can be golf balls, plastic or ceramic eggs, the easter eggs that come in hideous colors, etc. If there are no older hens already laying in the nests, sometimes the pullets have no idea what a nest box is for.

For one stubborn yard layer, I was told to tack up some burlap/feed sack to make "curtains" for a nest box. I did that and it instantly became the favored nest box.
I first tried two pieces of burlap, with the opening in the middle. Then I got lazy and just used one piece , offset so one side of the nest is open by about 2 inches or so.

THe first decade I had chickens, I had no coverings over the nestboxes. ALso had no problem with eggs not being laid in the nest except for the occasional hen laying at night on the roost. But something happened, and now about half of the nest boxes have burlap.

Having said that, I still find an egg or two in the yard every now and then.

wow! I'm wondering whether the hen raised guineas will have their suicidal tendancies trained right out of them by momma hen! Ralphie, do you eat guinea eggs?

I have never eaten a guinea egg, but I would if I ever found one that I had an idea how old it is.

When I had them locked up this spring I was saving eggs for hatching so I never ate them.

I do have my two remaining adult guineas locked up again. BUT they are both males. They will be given the opportunity to come on into the house for a special meal.

Ive survived the sconie wedding and I have my spotted cow so I'm running back for the border!! All your talk about hot chickens has me worried about our hens but we haven't had issues before. We made sure their waters were full and put out extras. Hopefully today is less 'hades-like'
