Howdy all

Ignorant chick question

I don't have a clue as to the ages of thes babies I have.  a couple still have a lot of fluff on their butts while a few look like they've come through a time warp - they are all a mixture of fluff sticking straight out and feathers.

Anywhoo - they are all on chick crumble and I give them a mashed up boiled egg once or twice a week.

Can I start putting any grasses or grass seeds (from the yard) into the mix for them?

Just wondering.

As long as they have grit (Ralph and I use fine gravel) they can. Mine grt it on day 1. I just take a scissors and cut tiny pieces for them.

You can, baby chicks with mama can free range right away. Just make sure you have grit available if they are eating grass and such as they need it to digest the grass. I took a puppy playpen, left the top on and put them in there with the bottom removed on the grass, so they could free range in the yard while I was building there coop last year. Don't know if I have a photo, i'll go look...

Minnie::
I Wish you were keeping them another year Minnie, I just don't have room for more birds right now, and,,,,, I would most likely wake up some morning to find my wife had murdered me in my sleep if I get more at this time... She can be so unreasonable.

I made a thermostat for my heat lamps using a water heater thermostat, it is easy to do, BUT it is hard to figure out where to put it that the birds are not covering it, with their bodies or poop.

Mistahblue, Yes I still get the porcelain egg and I still have no idea who lays it. I cannot see a reason you could not feed them boiled egg, but I have never done that unless it is in the table scraps mine get....

I think mine are free ranging by the age you are describing, if not free ranging they are in those "brooder/tractor" things you saw when you were here. I am getting them ready for my CX's now they will be free ranging by 3 weeks of age.

Well, I have decided with that aid of my two kids here, I am going to sell off my Cochins.  I love them, but I do have to reduce this year, and look at the list I had started (thinking I was cutting back), and still have too many on that list.  I am actually going to look for some bantam Cochins though to take care of my fluffy balls of fun fix.
So, holm25 has dibs but I have a few adults ad about 20 juvies to get rid of this Summer.  PM me if you are interested.  I will need to attempt to sex the youngest ones.

I am also going to get out of the White Silkies.  If anyone is interested in those, also PM me.  I don't have a lot of them, but maybe 15 young ones.  One is a cross beak pullet who seems to do just fine, but she is not for breeding, but could be a nice spoiled puffy head.

As if I don't have enough chickens... This is tempting :) I've always wanted a broody!

I have a new "Mom" story. I know these get old and I should stop posting them but I can't help myself....

I told my Mom I marked all the eggs under the Turkey in the woodshed yesterday, To leave her alone and let her sit. I should have known better.

I went to see her and she tells me " The turkey got off the nest."

I say " I know, she is not broody yet, she is just very protective of her eggs. I think she is close to broody to be that mean"

Her reply " Well, I went and looked in the nest, and there were three eggs in there that you did not mark, so I marked them for you"

Me " Mom, I marked them all yesterday"

Mom " well, you forgot three of them".

This requires another mikes hard lemonade to be consumed by me...

I figured there was no reason I mark them is to see if any new eggs appear, she would find a reason that would not work.
