Minnesota!

Nice, You put up a tent for your birds? I use those crates too, they work great.
Yeah, I wanted them to be outside enjoying the grass and nice weather, but I couldn't watch them too close as I was building their coop, so I put them in a puppy playpen near where I was working, they loved it!
I have a baby egg!

I assume it is a "oops" It could be a pullet egg but my oldest is only 15 weeks old. Kind of young.

I did not think I had any olive layers in that pen so who knows.. I am betting no yolk when I break it.

I had one of these tiny eggs this spring, perfectly formed, it did have a yoke!

So one of my SLW, Morticia is molting. She was trying to go broody about a week before she started molting, but I talked her out of it. So... she has become very skinny. she was eating, just not as much, her crop was maybe 1/4th full the last few nights. last night and tonight though it was pretty full. should I be worried? or do some lose weight when they molt? I've been giving extra protein and such...

Who asked about the waterers? I use a 2 gallon pail with horizontal nipples. In the winter I put a bird bath deicer and a pond pump in there to keep the nipples from freezing. I also sometimes use the rubber bowl everyone is yapping about. In the winter I put a gallon jug with sand in it so they don't walk in it and get frost bite and I set the bowl inside a heated dog dish (that works to keep the water unfrozen unless it is very cold), in the summer on hot days I'll throw a gallon jug filled 3/4's of way with frozen water to keep the water cool.

Hey Klop, an easier killing cone is made from a milk jug or detergent jug - cut off the bottom, and cut the neck as needed to allow room for the head. The heavier duty detergent jugs last longer.

Thank all y'all so much for the input. I did go out to the driveway and filtered through some sand and teeny tiny pieces of gravel -- sat in the living room and cut up some grasses, seed stems, etc into tiny pieces -- word to wise - I bought some of the Ball Herb scissors.***

I tossed that in with their feed last night -- everyone was alive this morning when I checked on them! Success I hope!

***I don't know if I'm just a special kind of stupid or what. I picked herbs the other day and tried using the herb scissors. I had to poke all the herb cuttings out of the scissor slots. Tried it again with the seed grasses - same thing. Maybe I need to research these scissors? Since it was with the canning and freezing stuff my thought was okay it's to cut herbs for drying. I guess now it's for cutting DRIED herbs for saving. doh.

Just ordered some beetles and mealworms to get started raising them for the birds. The guineas and peacocks think this is their Christmas treat in the evening for coop time. Of course peacocks are now cooped until their run is finished. But figure live worms will be more incentive to get their butts up at night.

Ralphie - I have been giving these chicks the mashed up boiled egg and they flipping go wild over it. Sorta makes me think of cannibalism but hey it's the way of nature.

Here's to a good day for all!!!
