Red is a picking color. If I wear a red shirt in the yard my rooster gets Bat Crap crazy.

I was thinking about putting her in a crate inside the coop for a day or two so she can be protected but they can see each other

be sure, though that it is Blue Kote and not another spray that is blue and antiseptic, it is called something different. I sprayed it (not the blue kote) on a chick and it screamed. So be sure it is Blue Kote! never felt so bad in my life!

I know what you mean! We cleaned her with perixide right away since it was all we had and she just cried and cried. It actually made my DW cry because she sounded so sad!

I would be on probation with Ralphie if I used the grammar I do in person! But yes, that is the perfect description of birds like Polish and Guineas and a few other breeds and species. I even have a few old friends I would describe that way.

Also wanted to comment on crested breeds and free ranging: highly susceptible to aerial preds.

Molting diet for us: back off on "treats". Keep pretty strict on feeder pellets or granules. Can go to higher protein like game bird or even have bought the feather fixer. I also throw out a can of tuna fish for 10 birds once a week. I swear I see those feathers grow over night after a fish day. The birds look less bedraggled after a fish day too. Higher energy. I get the 8 packs of tuna at Costco pretty cheap. Less than a dollar a can/week through molt season.

Our Sylvia is molting right now. Her neck is all pin feathers. I can just tell she's highly sensitive and protective of her little chicken bod. She's also been knocked way down the pecking order. She's usually top hen.

Honestly, it may SEEM like they are growing feathers faster, but that is more of a genetic trait than dietary. What providing more protein during molt will do it help keep them in good condition. It takes as long as it takes to grow feathers though. Some are fast molting and molt during later summer/early fall, which should also indicate better layers. Early molters and those who take a longer time to grow feathers are normally the poorer layers.

Yeah once the blu-kote is on I let them back in. I watch for awhile to see what happens but things generally have gone well.

As far as DS goes, I am glad he wants to come here. He actually wants to come and hang out with us and let me wash his stuff still. (you know how particular some kids can be about their things!

) Of course the younger kids LOVE when he is home and I know he loves it too. Funny when they change from being the kid to having adult conversations and then letting them go off on their own to make their choices. I kinda like this new relationship. I have no idea how in the world I will manage with all the kids grown and gone. I just might spiral into a crazy chicken collecting addition.

I can relate, Rhetts. Our oldest moved out a little over a year ago. It is interesting the conversations we have now, though not quite as adult as I wish they were. We have to remind ourselves that he is still pretty young and needs to make a few mistakes before he will get on the right path to really being an full-fledged grown up. He texted last night about being the only one who cleans in the apartment after scrubbing the bathroom for 2 hours. Yup, he is learning.

I have a crazy chicken addiction because I am crazy. Maybe my kids played a part in that, maybe not. All I know is there are days I would rather be in a chicken house than my own. SOME days, not every day.

I wish I knew chicken breeds as well as Minnie does... BUT I am too lazy and old to learn them...

I unplugged my last incubator yesterday, the only thing left running is my hatcher, and this morning I got the first of my last hatch another Guinea! (just what I need) I have a couple dozen to hatch, I would like to get a 50% rate but who knows. When I moved them to the hatcher (yesterday) most felt good,,, You know weight and balance thingy. I did not candle.

They were not suppose to start hatching until tomorrow, but one little guy could not wait. He is chirping away and rolling the other eggs around. For some reason even baby guineas hate to be alone.

My last turkey hen has finally disappeared, I assume she started setting last night/yesterday. She has turkey eggs because I have no idea where her nest is. and her poults are going to be anyone's guess as to who the father is. If they are rusty, bronze or black they will be JJ's. If they are self blue or blue they should be the young tom, but who knows for sure......

I am keeping the one incubator out but not running, because the blue might have one turkey egg under her with the dozen chicken eggs, She is not really letting me check them.

No - when I called my vet to ask about the bird they researched it then they called the Board of Health and he called me initially. I did call him about the dead Silkie. So far no new deaths but the little sick chick is still same. He doesn't think I have AF -- said IF it was then by yesterday I should have several more dead birds. Roomie noticed the chick supposed to be a leghorn seems to be pecking and pushing the others -- think we've got a roo in the bunch. Suspect he pecked Silkie in the head. :'( Just bleached another crate to house him separately from the others. Surely hoping to move out of the garage into a smaller shelter within a week.

Read some more on here and other sites about possibly a viral type infection so started her on medicated food last night. She's trying her darndest to sit up without her head falling over or turning completely upside down.

I'm completely stumped. Yesterday her head would jerk like she was having seizures and pull hard to the right. Today during feeding it does not seem as bad as yesterday. One step forward and two back I guess.

When you get chicks from hatchery and they are vaccinated against Mercks is it true they cannot be around other poultry? Someone at the local TS told the Roomie that last night.
