DD got her first Polish egg today!  She said she is the happiest girl in the world today!  Isn't it funny how a chicken laying an egg can make someones day! (I know how happy it makes me feel!)
When i Got my first pulley egg I was elated! My family thought I was pretty weird a I gently put the egg on the carton and then took a picture :)

I absolutely love this! I've seen a few nursing homes are getting chickens now for their residents aside from the canaries and finches in the hutch that you usually see I suppose. I can think of nothing better than watching chickens. I heard once that watching chickens is like looking out over the ocean. There is constant motion and movement in them that is so relaxing.

The hands-on chores of doing something worthwhile and caring for something that gives back in eggs or love is a powerful thing. I remember my husband's Grandmother had to be moved to assisted living after 90 some years on a farm. She obviously became depressed and expressed her dislike for the assisted living. Some of the family members tried to keep pursuing her to like it...but I understood and I let her vent with me. Can you Imagine? But she would leave ovens on and such...you get the picture. Well I just made it my goal to bring a pumpkin to carve with her at Halloween or bring her out to the farm and have her help me husk sweetcorn for dinner. These simple things--her using her hands-- I think helped her. I still remember those ears of corn shucked to perfection. Not one silk left on the ear and mine with threads stuck and hard to get off. Her hands remembered with all their experience.

Those chickens in those settings....just wonderful.

My first girl to lay an egg, Cluck-Cluck, with her first egg last year. I just happened to be out there at the time cleaning the coop, told her she was a good girl. After she laid it she just kinda stood there with a surprised look on her face... "What the..?" Hahaha I pulled it out of the nest box and she just sat there staring at it.

I never have a camera when I need one. During Chicken TV time tonight we had an explosion. The turkey hen and her 6 chicks ( yep that is the final count) were under my old granary and in the wood shed attached to it where she hatched them out.

It appears Ed got too close to the hen for her comfort. We heard such a racket, and what to our wondering eye should appear, but Ed running like h-e double hockey sticks out of the wood shed. I have never seen Ed run so fast. Ed is not a dumb rooster!

He ran next too and past Ernie who was minding his own business, eating the treats. The turkey forgot Ed and jumped on Ernie. Ernie is notthe brightest rooster in the world, but he knew enough to run and run he did! He out ran the turkey hen, who then caught site of JJ (turkey tom) and she went after JJ. JJ is quite smart for a turkey tom, he also ran. He ran past the dog that was also minding her business rolling on her back with her legs up and something in her mouth..

You got it. The turkey attacked the dog. She squawked and jumped on her. ( luckily she was muzzled to stop poop eating) and dug in hard. Wings flopping and claws digging, The poor dog was caught completely off guard. By the time she figured out she was in trouble the turkey was done with her and headed back to her chicks..... I am afraid my hunting dog might have a turkey phobia now...
