Minnesota!

I have a picture here of the soft shell egg we got today and it had something stuck to it. I can only venture guesses as to what the heck it is. Anyone know what I am dealing with here?

And I have been getting oops eggs (yolkless eggs the size of a nickel but they have a regular shell). 3 so far in one week. Was wondering if the oops eggs and the softshells were coming from the same hen. Today I got one of each so it couldn't be the same hen right?

I have seen pictures of that "fetus" looking thingy before, not sure what it is called Minnie will know, If I recall they just happen, but you should watch that hen for some kind of infection or growth, if I recall correctly which I probably don't.

DR - I don't know if it's the heat or if Lena beeked him cause he sure has mellowed out a bit! He was driving her nuts and I noticed a few times she was turning back toward him like she was going to go after his pretties. LOL

Poor Ole. I was going to say in the little I saw him it looks like he had lost a few tail feathers, but that could be molting and not Lena getting all up in his....a...a...a... Stuff.

The DW and I are headed up the north shore on an 8 day camping trip all the way to grand portage and back. Any recommendations of good scenic roads (remember truck with a travel trailer accessible) or places we should stop to see or eat? We have been to jay Cooke and tettagouche and just love that area. We are going for 9 nights and visiting 7 state parks along the way.

You'll be in my neck of the woods! I live outside of Grand Marais and work in Grand Portage.

DW wants to dip into canada while we are up there just to say we did.  We have 2 dogs, do you think we would be able to cross over there on 61?  I know we will need our passports, but will the dogs cause issues?

I've never brought my dogs across, but I think you need proof of certain vaccines. Rabies maybe?

Nevermind, it doesnt matter... Ontario has a ban on bringing any 'pitbull type breeds' into the country. One of my dogs is a black lab and Pit mix so I guess that isnt an option. That is sad that they discriminate against the breed. My pup is sweet as can be and very obedient... none the less i will admit that the breed is very impressionable so it doesn't take much of a bad owner for the dog to be a nuisance.

I just read about that when I went to look up the vaccine thing. Horrible!
Well there are plenty of things here in Cook county you can do with your dogs! Have a great trip, and maybe we'll cross paths and not even know it!

We've taken dogs across and it is just a vet signed rabies certification. That's weird about the pitbull thing. Huh! Pitbulls can be very loving. It's just a matter of how they're socialized. As with most dogs I'd say.

Camper is packed. We'll get last minute add in groceries in Hibbing and head the rest of the way to the fall lake/ BWCA.

There's a part of me that feels the need to weed gardens and do coop projects this weekend. But just a small part of me. Maybe Sunday when we get back...

Rhetts - That appears to be what is called a "lash". This hen just isn't heading in the right direction. Once again, it is your call on what you will tolerate from them. If she is laying normal eggs enough to satisfy you? I wouldn't keep one around who has continued issues like that. It is most common to see this kind of stuff happen with hatchery type birds who are bred to be really high production layers. I haven't had any with an ongoing problem in laying since I switched from hatchery to breeder origins for my birds. From the consistency of the color, I would think that egg and lash were both out of the same hen. It is possible to get a fart egg and a normal egg from one hen in one day, so I think both of those are possible.
The other thing I have seen, and this is around molt or when a hen is coming back into lay after that winter break, is like a membrane stuck to the egg, and maybe even covering all or part of it. That, I am quite sure, is the shedding of lining of the oviduct or egg gland (where the shell is formed). It is weird and gross to see that, but it doesn't usually mean anything else is wrong.

My little sister is in labor with her first baby!

Brought our rottweiler over the border. Let her out of the car so she could pee. Almost lost her because she was black and it was pitch black out. For us it was the same deal with the certification.
Pitbulls rule and that rule is stupid.

Hope you find your Rooster Ralphy!

Have a great time!
We're heading out on a long camping trip in a couple of days. My Rosie is a pit/dobie mix and the sweetest thing next to me on this earth. It is all about socialization and good training.
