Do u all think its to late to let a broody hatch some eggs???

I wouldn't. They will barely have their full feathers and it will be getting cold at 8-weeks. It is up to you though, but personally I find going that late is just not worth it and it is hard on those young birds.

I need to know if my family is the only one that uses or used the phrase " Scare the pants off you" Or "scared the pants off me"...


Such as I rolled the tractor on the hillside and it darn near scared the pants off me..


I bet it scared the pants off you when that bear growled......

We have always used it. MY grandpa used it all the time with us kids, I think it was a nice way of saying "pooped my pants" (and I do not mean the word poop)

Yes, we use these phrases. You are not the only weirdo.

I lost an austrolorp today. Assuming it is from the heat. Just found her laying right next to the coop. No feathers or foul play no blood. I counted the chickens in the coop probably a dozen times to make sure I had them all. Too bad.
So besides making sure they have fresh cool water *which we change during the day often* what else can we do to combat the heat stress? What does everyone do for their flocks to mange them during these hot stretches? Yes, they have shade too. What else can I do for them?

Sorry about your loss Rhetts. Those BA's are great birds and that would be a hard loss for me personally. During hot stretches Mine go to the north side of the house under a big flowering hydrangea bush and they lay their breasts in the cool scratched dusting dirt. I also put frozen water bottles with the caps left off. As they melt they just add to the water supply within the waterer. I've also seen people freeze blue berries or strawberries in cube trays and the birds pick at them and cool off. I think them keeping their internal temp cooler with cold drinks and treats is what helps. I've also heard they'll sometimes find low water spots and cool off by getting their legs wet. I like the idea of a mister too. I don't think they'd go through a regular sprinkler though...? mine don't like rain or any form of it...that I know.

They mentioned how inappropriate the phrase was as if it was some kind of sexual defiant thing. I was dumbfounded. I unsubscribed and came running back here to home ,never to leave again....




I have been running a sprinkler for my birds....so maybe I do have a suggestion. They seem to ike either sitting in it or near it. It is a misting sprinkler.

How come these other threads are so snakey I wonder. Is it the heat? Sheesh...besides me I think that's like 2-3 more people come running back the Minnesota "nice" thread. I think people are just "brave" with their keyboards and screens. B***-turds.

Speaking of Bass. We didn't catch any bullheads but we got into a mess of jumbo sunnies, redhorse and smallies up on the Kawishiwi River near BWCA. It was loads of fun. My kids were all smiles and DH too. There was lots of catching and releasing of the redhorse and smallies. But the Sunnies didn't seem to fair as well at release time. Yum.

Those oops eggs are so tiny it is funny! I really enjoy these cooler temps. You can actually be outside doing things. I was able to weed in the garden today. And the veggies that have grown with that rain we got!! Wow!

I made it through the weekend with minimal suffering. My mom is on her way back home. I think she enjoyed her time so I must have done something right. Trying to take a more relaxed approach really helped. Thanks.

So I have another question for you all. I have one rooster that seems to think he should be in the nest boxes. He is huge (a Brahma still maturing) and breaking my eggs. He sleeps in there at night. I was thinking of tacking up some sort of cover for at night to keep all nest boxes off limits. But that means I would have to go out to the coop sooner in the morning to uncover it. That may or may not be an issue. But that doesn't solve the fact that he goes in during the day. How about adding a bigger lip to the bottom so it is a smaller opening? But I do have larger breeds that need to get in and out of the boxes too. How big should the nest openings be or not be? Any thoughts? If it continues and he cannot be broken of his hiding in the boxes habit I have no intentions of keeping him. Plain and simple I need the eggs and there are other roosters.

Rhett does he prefer just that one nest like the girls? If so you can just try just blocking off that nest altogether. make another inviting to the girls. See if it's just the favorite nest or if he is just being a PITA. I think I remember one of my excess roos (a submissive) lurking in nest boxes to wait for a mate. Because the dominant would kick his tail feathers at any other time. And it was the only time a hen could be "corralled". Dirty dog.

Speaking of roosters, we finally picked a name for our Rainbow roo we kept. We were at the wedding and met an older gentleman with a great name, such inspiring us to name him Conrad!
We also got a few good old lady name ideas

Yes. Your hen will be needing to get on with molting and using her excess energy for making feathers. More energy than broodiness and lack of eating and drinking will accommodate, I would think. IT would be hard on her. And in 21 days or so...our weather likes to switch in good ole Minnesota... Up to you though holm like Minnie says...

Ralphie...how could you part with Cookie?! OMG. So adorable! Glad he/she has a good home with a pea buddy.

Well This trip we took camping was by far one of the most gorgeous in the RV. If you have not been there I encourage all to visit Fall Lake/ BWCA/Kawishiwi Falls. There is so much to do and see. It was just us 4 & Sadie Mae; and as it turned out DH had a work colleague by coincidence, there as well so we spent a little time fishing the Kawishiwi with them. The catching was good. The views gorgeous. Our pup, Sadie Mae, again...so well behaved camping with us. I guess we're more of a captive audience, camping too. She swam rivers with current, didn't chew anything she wasn't suppose to. Helped me with dishes. Slept like a rock every night and on the way home.











I think I even got our Christmas CArd photo of the kids and Sadie at the Falls. So check that one off the list too. On the down side I made an error in judgment crossing a rapids on slippery rocks with a "dry" bag full of cell phones. Much to my surprise our 20 year old dry bag may need to be checked in for a new one.... And my DH and DD are without their favorite fruit phones. And Dear Mother is on the S list. Crap. I felt horrible and was way too focused on the loss until DS came to me and said, "Mom this is the best trip we've taken ever and I don't want you to think about it any more" How focused we all are on our technology and I'm the first one that wants to get the kids off that crap. And here I was the worst about the loss on phones. Good Lutheran guilt I guess.

So I refocused yesterday and made the most of our last day in camp and after fishing, did crafts with my daughter and we didn't think about the dang phones anymore.

Chickens: well FIL, bless him did better this time with all 10 chicken heads accounted for. Roger my Roo looks a little more defeathered as he progresses in his molt. A little ruffled looking for such a good lookin' feller.

And finally some of my tomatoes are ripening and I had 2 Lemon Boys and almost have a Purple Cherokee ready for the pickin'. Num.

I've had what I think are fruit fly larvae in my moistened feed as well. x 2 on the "extra protein' . They'll need it for molting.

Cyrus that baby is beautiful. Congrats to the family. I feel like I'm forgetting some stuff. Thanks everybody for holding down the fort. MInnesota thread remains at number 8. Chatty Kathies.

BC Letting Cookie go was hard. It was the hardest time I had with letting a bird go. He/she really worked his way into out lives in those 3 short days.


BUT I am so glad he has a pea buddy.. As long as I see pictures I will be happy..

I am hoping it is a she.

Just a bunch of whipper snappers or something on that one, must be. I have heard that since I was a little child. It was what one said before one learned to get away with getting the (poop) scared out of them. If someone found offense at that, they need to check themselves for a mental condition.
Heck, even Idina Mentzel dropped the "f" bomb a few times at her concert the other night and no one seemed to upset. However, I was a bit surprised considering there will some little boys and girls there.

Thanks Minnie and Ralphie! Glad to chat again with you guys as well. It's good to be home. Beautiful beautiful place.

Ralphie: I read a little of the posts on the thread in question. May I just say there is just a little hoytie Toytieness there and they are even hosting some of the biggest trouble makers I've ran into on that thread. There is a section of our country...and I'll not shout it out loud...but they generally are not that friendly, and all could do with some "Nice Manners" boot camp in the Midwest if I do say so myself.

Rhetts, so sorry for your loss, that heat was terrible. I keep their water very cold with a jug of frozen water in there, also give frozen or very cold water melon or fruit. Try and give more watery vegetables such as cabbage. I don't let them free range until 6 or 6 30 pm as my girls won't rest in the shade when they are free, it is go go go. I put their fans on the hen house so they don't get over heated while laying. Just some things I do. When I saw one really in distress, I brought her inside to cool off.
