My DH brother and his family, DH cousin and his family. They just moved there in the last few years or so to work at LP. They are kind of a nomadic family so they have lived all over the US. Think they last came from Wisconsin in the Stone Lake area.

every time I've gone in to check them today they've been cuddled together within the 'circle' of socks we put in there. a few have taken in water, a couple did take a bite of moistened game bird starter. figure by tomorrow they will be good and ready to mow down anything I put in there.

The good news is we managed to get the outer walls of the winter shelter up. Between me working jobs and roommate working from 5:45 to 6:30 6 days a week we've had no time to accomplish diddly squat. I figure we will be building when the snow flies......

Are wild turkeys on the move these days? I've not seen any around the house but our peacocks are honking up a storm - early morning and later afternoon. I figure they can see or hear them? Just wondering.

Can birds smell?

You are absolutely correct. I completely forgot about them! She could very well be one, but not much Copper showing.

And Ralphie,
BSLs are either Rhode Island or New Hampshire crossed with Barred Rock. The males come out Barred and females are black with the red leakage around the neck and breast, hence the sex linked characteristic making them identifiable by color. However, as chicks they are all black and the color trait to watch for is the big white spot on the head for the cockerels. It turns out a little Barred bantam hen bread to a White Silkie or a Salmon Faverolle works the same way ;) Need a bantam Barred rooster or 7?

I heard the guineas making a hellacious racket and went outside to see what was the matter.....

Okay momma guinea has kicked the eggs away and just stopped sitting. One wee one succumbed to the cold or momma killed it. I have one egg with a large portion of shell gone but chick was not moving. massaged chest and breathed into it - it's breathing and chirping but not trying to pull away from shell. I've got it on a heated herbal wrap surrounded by a towel.

What can I do to help it along besides leaving it be? I was afraid to leave in the brooder with other chicks. I know it takes them awhile to hatch -- I don't have an incubator. I gathered the remaining eggs - all cold as stone. No pips visible so I don't know if they are dud eggs or what. will candle them later.

Can I just leave it under a heat lamp or is that going to be too warm?

I feel terrible but knowing guineas aren't the brightest crayon in the box I know they aren't the best at mothering either.
