I use DE,, I have a linoleum flooring then i put a tarp down (this way i can just drag the tarp out when i want to clean and everything is on tarp) I use straw because my girls seem to like it, then i throw DE all over the top toss it a couple times with a pitchfork and im done. I tried Pine shavings before but my girls didnt like it i think it was to slippery for them, thats OK by me because straw is cheaper. Ive only had to clean my coop floor once the summer since i got my girls because there is never anything on the floor BUT my poop board is another matter FULL every morning, but thats ok thats what i wanted them to do. they are never in the coop anyways only to sleep... I did have a mite problem but i think that was from getting 2 new hens and not quarantine them dont think it was from the straw but one never knows... OHHHH and I also use DE in their dust bath area....

Excellent idea! I have yet to get a poop board down. 6 of the hens still huddle in a corner rather than roost. They have access to the roosts and can fly up there....they just don't want to. I hope they kick this habit. I don't think there's anything I can do. I've put things in the corner and they still squish in there.

I bought a couple of bags of PDZ today to try out.
We use a mix of straw and shavings, poop board project is next.

I have been thinking of getting my poop board project going all summer!! And now there is even more to get done in the coop then I thought before winter hits. Yikes! I really wanted to put one up.
I was thinking about trying PDZ just on the poop board maybe some sprinkled in the shavings but I really think having that board will really cut down on the poop piled up and less cleanings during winter. Would be really helpful in the long run I think.

Coffee the outside of the coop and run are so nice and neatly done. You did well girl. You did well.

Wow!

You can watch on the first windy day to see what that plastic does. But yeah...you might want to cinch down the bottoms there so it doesn't catch and tear up and ruin your hard work. I tell you Every winter after a blustery I need to go back down and retack a few sides myself. It just happens if the wind is strong enough...pretty much anyways.

Holm I love all your cows, Your COOP!!! especially and those special birds there. A long hard day...but looks like you got 'er done. Good job.

Have you tried making a ramp? i know my girls wouldn't fly up to the roost if there was a fox in there with them... They use to huddle in the corner and every night i would go out there and pick them up and place them on the roost i was getting tired of it.. as soon as i put up a ramp they started using it...

my poop board is awesome keeps the coop floor clean, i found it is better to have a thinner layer of PDZ then thick layer just my opinion. when i had pdz thicker layer it really sucked to DIG DEEP...lol...
