danged chickens , the three that are laying anyway, decided to change nests again. I truly dislike feeling around on the shelf, which is above my head, for eggs. Always make contact with a nice cold wet glob of chicken #%@*. Found the new nest, though.

There are, of course, 4 nice nests in one of those galvinized nesting boxes with the trap doors, three nest boxes in old apple crates, and another nest in a basket.

I should be grateful they aren't laying in the nest area they excavated under the coop way on the other side next to the old trailer tire/wheel hub. That involves laying full length on the ground and kind of shimmying across. Guaranteed to get hay up your shirt.

and did anyone see that gorgeous crescent moon setting tonight? so beautiful.

Good luck. All I ever do at casinos is buy canoes.

Fleur's predator visited again today. It's an osprey. We were working in the yard and on the coop so it didn't like that and moved on. Tootsie had moved all the hens to safety under a briar of blackberry canes. He's so dam smart. I wonder what's to be done with a recalcitrant osprey. Fudge.

Coop is lined completely with Reflectix. New pine shavings and nest boxes lined with fresh cut long wild grasses and mint and oregano. I need to zip strip in my power cords and get butterfly fasteners for the flat panel heater. I'm mounting that with a nicer set up. Then figure out the watering station in the run. That will be tomorrow.

Last night when I checked on the birds I saw a pair of eyes shining in the dark back at me. I set a live trap behind the shed earlier. I caught a weasel in it. The live trap malfunctioned, the weasel for some reason died in the trap.

I moved it to where I saw the eyes last night. I also set up a game camera. I caught the second culprit too. It was a cute little kitten. Older than Klopper's but not an adult. Big wide open eyes and scared to death. The live trap did not malfunction and I released it alive. In retrospect I should have kept it and moved it to a cage and tried to tame it.

I did not mention the eyes on here last night incase it was something that required the 3 S's.

After releasing the cat, we had to deal with some guinea issues, They refused to go into the coop tonight and trued to roost above the turkeys in the game bird netting. We spent hours untangling them, without breaking or cutting the netting. I think I would rather cut the guineas than the netting. I still have half a dozen outside but they are roosting on roofs, in trees and on support poles where I can not get them.

After we got them taken care of, and it was quiet again, I heard coyotes in the swamp. My nephew shot a deer in about the area the howling was coming from. Great another predator in the area.

BC have you ever tried Osprey and Dumplings? Would you like my recipe? Make sure you add the dumplings it is just not as good without them.

Well last night I shot a little button buck!! Saw six deer and shot the smallest.
Congrats Holm!

Everyone must be out partying tonight

Well, was in hell today (MOA) my friends kid's birthday. I spent some time with my friend as her kid and friends wanted to be there from open to close, so I wen't down for a few hours to keep her company. Got some walking in though, so got over my 10k steps, yey! glad to be back to do my chicken chores. DH was nice enough to free range the girls and tuck them in.

I saw it, it was very nice. I cleaned the coop then went back out to catch some shooting stars for while, saw half a dozen in about a half hour, fun stuff.

Oh no! hopefully you scared it off for good with your presense. Sounds like you got alot done for winter prep today. My husband took the brackets that came with the flat panel heater mounted them on a 2x4, then screwed the 2x4 to the wall. the heater sits on top of the 2x4 in the brackets and I can take the heater out, or put it in easily (spring and fall). I leave the brackets and 2x4 up all year.
I don't know if I have a photo, if not, i'll have to get one for you. Found one, this is from last year

Funny thing. this morning I went out there to let them out, it was 28 on the outside thermometer, but 45 in the henhouse, a 17 degree difference with no heat on yet. I have it hooked to a thermcube to come on at 0 so it won't come on for hopefully awhile yet. Thought it was cool that it was warmer in there though, even without the heater.

Also this morning, frost on the nesting box top, and nothing on the windows, inside or out, good stuff!

Great job catching the weasel. maybe put out some food for the kitty, maybe it will stick around and take care of mice and rats and some predators...
