Minnesota!

Coffee......nooo!! I'm so sorry

You have had a run of bad luck. I swear the first year of chicken keeping is the worst. It seemed like for me it was one problem after another, but after that first year it's just been a breeze. Here's to better times ahead!

Morning all - had a painless commute this morning :)

Our dog disappeared for about six hours yesterday. Normally I let her out before I leave for work and she goes back to sleep with my daughter.

This time she didn't but I wasn't too worried.

In the afternoon I received a can from a number in Scandia, they had my dog but my mom picked her up.

She not been the same since. Not overtly injured but very timid. Normally greets me at the door when I get home but didn't even get up.
I think she got lost and ran around for hours until the man on the other side of the lake took her in and called us.
This morning she would not go outside, I had to put her on a leash and take her for a walk.
Weird... makes you wonder what happened to her during those six hours

I'm glad she's home safe and I hope she comes around to her old self soon

Scandia, thank goodness someone called about your dog. Hope she gets a little more confidence back. Maybe something scared her/chased her.....

Coffee, I am so sorry about your hen. There is nothing worse than that awful sinking feeling. December has always been the worst time for me with hawk predation -

Hawks, like foxes and dogs, will come back so you might want to keep them safe and not let them out unless supervised for a few weeks.

She is on and off. she definitly looks more lively. she scarfs any scrambled eggs i make her. She seems indifferent on the chicken crumbles...

She is getting spoiled, time to put her out with her own kind ;)
you know we will need pics of the lamp.....
What's wrong with this picture? (hint: it is supposed to be december, right? in Minnesota?)

Aussiegal, sorry you have the flu, and Minniechickmama, I am so sorry your husband is thinking of trying to fix the vacumn cleaner cord.

I am getting a little worried about Goldie. She isn't really eating. The only thing I can get her to eat is apple. And cut up clover/dandelion/grass. She does go to town on the apple, eats right down to the peel. But she needs protein, right? Wont eat raw, hardboiled or scrambled egg. No canned cat food and not tuna either. Not turkey. Not chicken feed and not chicken scratch. Not yogurt. Geesh.

Only 19 days til xmas.
I think you need to get a big syringe and tube feed her with yogurt and wet crumbles in a slurry. Start getting her system going. I am sure she is off balance in her gut from all that has happened and needs more nutrients. It really isn't that hard to do. I would wrap her an a towel so you don't have to fight with her and cause her more pain. It sounds like she is just going to take a while too to come back around to normal, and I can't say as I am surprised.

morning all
Cluckies, I think I will hit the bait shop and get some meal worms, and maybe move her to the coop on Wed. She might do better with company.

Happy Monday, everyone. May your work week be fast and painless!

Don't ever wish for time to pass quickly! Unless you are ill. I find time passes faster all the time and I am to a point that I wish to savor what time I have for fear that before I know it, I will be too old to do all the things I love to and I will be left wondering 'where did all the years go?".
RIP Kathy,,, noticed last night their was only 7 on roost when I locked up but figured there must be 1 snuggled in the middle. This morning I counted and only 7 .. I found a pile of feathers nothing but feathers no blood no bones . The boy next door came out of his house and said I seen that hawk that got your bird sorry about that but it was kinda cool... REALLY.... He could have tried to help her or come and get me.. I'm sure it would have been to late but I feel bad for her.. Now I have the rest locked in the run. And I have to watch my dogs because they are all smaller then the chickens...
I am sorry to hear about this. I am sure the kid next door just doesn't understand, I wouldn't feel to harshly about it toward him. Maybe ask if he ever sees that again if he could yell and try to scare it off or come and let you know. It seems this sort of thing is going around.
The first year we had chickens, our dogs killed ALL of them. It started out with my oldest one picking off a hen here and there. Then the two older dogs went into a frenzy and killed all but 2 of the 28 started birds we got as chicks that Summer. I had 8 birds left until February when they killed all of the rest. I was so angry I wanted to thrash them both. I know I learned all kinds of lessons my first year. I figured Mother Nature really wanted me to dig my heels into this chicken thing by teaching me so much so quickly ;) LOL

Thanks - I do think something frightened her. Maybe it will keep her closer to home. :)
Perhaps she is just spooked and will calm down. Our first dog was always happy go lucky and loved going to the place we boarded him. We took him once after they changed staff, and he came him scared and crying when we touched him for the first day. All I could figure is someone had done something abusive to him while he was there that time. I couldn't prove anything, but we never took them back and I had called them and told them I knew someone had done something to make him act like he did. I was furious.
I hope your puppy just got spooked from getting lost and needs some TLC to bring her back to herself.

Minni .. No I'm not to mad I was at 1st but to him I'm sure it was cool to see. Wow sounds like a very tough 1st year with the dogs.. Did they get trained or did u get new dogs? Scandia hope ur pup has learned a lesson ... There is no place like home...

I am glad to hear your aren't mad. Sometimes I think we forget how disconnected people are from things like chickens keeping and agriculture. It would make sense to us to try and run the hawk off but he probably had no idea how that would impact you. I highly doubt he had any malice in not acting. Sorry again for your loss :( I've buried two hens that were raptor bait this fall and it sucks
