Minnesota!

What breeds are you selling?

Right now its pretty much only silkies on the chicks for sale and the ones that do sell that high when older. They are my main breed and I'm the state rep for ASBC. I've got a few bantam faverolles coming out of the incubator. My bantam polish are just starting to lay. My mom has her standard cochins from Rick Klehr and standard light brahmas from Mark Peterson. I try not to raise many of them because they are HUGE. We have 8 varieties of peafowl. On the fancy pigeons we have Bohemian pouters and American Show Racers. Selling out of waterfowl so we can comply with getting AI certified.... 2 trios of brown Africans, a trio and pair of white Africans, 3 exhibition rouens left for sale. We are into the show birds and mom has a few misc hatchery junk birds for yard pets and layers.

We got enough snow to be a PITA to blow out. I had some 3-foot drifts in my way in the chicken pasture that I had to ask DH to blow out so I could get to the 3 spots I have smaller coops and the hoop in. The hoop is plenty warm, maybe too warm. I don't have it completely buttoned up either, but there was moisture on the inside of the tarp. As the temps drop, it will likely dry out some. I just hope the boys don't get their combs all nipped off. I better get wire around at beak level in there though because they are pecking at the plastic and will be making some serious holes if I don't.
I think we only got about 5" altogether, but it is hard to tell since it blows around so much here. I looked at what they had in town and figured that was about what we got. Town being at a lower elevation, they don't get the wind we do.
I hope everyone stays warm enough over the next few. It looks like Winter is definitely here. I would rather it stay below freezing for the rest of winter too, that damp stuff staying just above freezing just makes chickens sick.

I am not in a huge rush to get chicks hatching, but it is going to start soon though. I got my first Buckeye eggs in a couple of months. I have most everyone in their breeding pens or at least breeds split out. I just have to replace the fan in the incubator before I need to start stuffing them in there.

Keep warm and be safe on the roads!

Our weatherman said 6"+ down here. We also had drifts knee high and higher through the yard. We even got enough snow during the day yesterday to have to plow again. Maybe 2-3" more.

How cool are these oat sprouts!?!?

4 day old sprouts, just coming up

5 day old sprouts are over an inch tall

These aren't growing quite as vigorously as i thougth they would. I think it may be a touch cool for them on my porch. Our house stays in the low 60's an is probably a couple degrees cooler on the porch. I continue to learn as i go :) the kittens move out this weekend and i am going to set up a grow hut in the basement with lights and a little warmer similar to what @Minniechickmama has but enclosed. Then i can grow sprouts in them for a few months until I am ready to start seeds for the garden.

Looks good, but yes, i'd bring them in for more warmth, if you don't have heat anywhere, get a seedling mat to put underneath for better growth. you can get them at fleet farm or amazon the sprouts don't need light at all. they need good air flow so they don't mold. I'd drill holes in your containers to allow them to drain, you could put another underneath to catch the draining water. I did a smaller scale version in a berry box last year, may get a bigger set up for this year though, or more berry boxes to do one a day and keep it rotating. 5 days and an inch long is about when i would feed them. I'll get some going and post a photo, mine is hard red wheat grass though.

Seedling trays work good as well. I may even have some of those... hmmmm
