Roosting - is it better to have horizontal roosts or like steps?
Mine are in a step fashion but after looking at the setup in Holm's coop - it looks good with the poop board.

I have two roosts that are about 8ft long wall to wall. One is about 10in higher than the other. They, of course, like the higher roost and the corners are prime waterfront properties. However, now that we recently put in poop boards, they've all been hanging out in front of the nest boxes, which is really annoying. They're constantly bickering now. I think the poop boards scared them at first *sigh* Last night, I moved them all over to the roosts and they were still there this morning. Only the roosters moved. They like the far corner by the door and that's fine. I like a lot of other setups I've seen with ladder type roosts with a poop board underneath. I might do a little reworking this summer.

Here's a picture:

@scandia, I was done... she called me though. :( I'm not going to initiate conversation with her. He hasn't been crowing, and their quarantine area is right next to our bedroom... like against it outside. Should hear something, maybe in a few days hopefully. Otherwise he could just be a quiet rooster, in which case I HAVE to get him better!! ;)

Scandia I almost bid on 12+ Biefelders last spring but never did. I want some so bad!! We will need lots of pics! Congrats on the soon to be babies!

The chickens definetly liked the limbs to roost on! They dont have limbs now but I think they're happy with this one... I think.

I'm planning a coop remodel this summer and will use branches instead of 2x4s.

My parents, after they stopped their beef cattle operation started a tree farm. We certainly have enough branches!
My guess is that for chickens it is more comfortable and natural to wrap their feet around a branch.

Just make sure they are big enough. I would say my smallest branch is 2" across and they fill that one last. The bigger ones go first

My father was born 100 km from Bielefeld, where the breed originated.
