Minnesota!

We're going to rehome our SLWxBCM rooster and keep our BCM Maran rooster. We really don't have a need for two roosters, which is tugging at my heart. Anyways, I had a thought about hatching some OE's from my BCM rooster and my two Ameraucana hens. DH thinks I'm crazy, but I think I'm genius! You can never have too many olive eggs, right?

Awesome! Whats hatching? Is it Bucks and bantams?
Same as last time. I put EEs in but none have been fertile yet, which is irritating since I have 3 roosters in with that pen. My Welsummers are zero fertility too so far, but I plan to switch roosters or add a second to stir things up because they sometimes gets the males going with doing their job better ;) ;)
This batch has White and Blue Silkies, bantam crosses, NH, Buckeyes and one Cochin, I think.

@Minniechickmama , I'm still a bit nervous to trim my silkie's beak. I'm giving her a haircut tonight and plan on stepping up the spa experience with a beak trim. Should I use a nail clipper or a small trimming scissors? What's the possibility of me over trimming? I have this vision in my head of clipping a small portion and the entire beak falls off. I need more sleep. Lol

I just watched some youtube videos on how to do it. We'll see....

My second hatch is due tomorrow, so of course, they started hatching yesterday when I was moving them from the incubator to the hatcher.  There are about 10 of them out already.  :barnie

You can read where if your temp is higher than it needs to be, that will cause them to hatch early, and if it is lower they will take longer.  Well, my temp is 100.5.  If I turn it lower, I have problems.  If I raise it, I have problems.  So, I will take chicks hatching early over chicks not hatching at all or hatching with guts hanging out.

Congrats on the babies! I'm going to start when I get back from Cancun.

Did I mention that I was flying to Cancun?

I can never get over how fast chicks grow!!! Those ones from last week are getting feathers and putting on weight so nicely! Did I ever mention how much I absolutely LOVE

my Buckeyes?? They are the ones that will come over and peck at my hands too when I am feeding and watering. Not in a way that is aggressive, just checking things out like, "Hey, what is that? I wonder if it is food? I think I will try it!"
I notice tonight, Mila, our little orange "pole" cat, was watching those chicks a little too intently. It is good I have a lid on their brooder. Speaking of brooders, I will be setting up the new one tomorrow of the hatch coming out right now. I had this grand idea of taking one of those shelf kits and making little mini (what I call mini) brooders on each shelf, but figuring out the water and the heat source has proven too much of a pain in the butt for me, so I will be doing something similar to what I have been with the floor having older chicks/young juvies and the new and younger chicks will be in a shelf over that that is split into sections. I put off using the floor ones until it isn't so cold out since the chickens going under the brooder house stripped most of the insulation out that I put under. I have to remedy that this Summer.
Jerome, the fat tom, he likes to go in and snuggle with the chicks. He also loves me to pick him up, but he just sits on my arm and will give me a touch to the nose with his, then let me scratch his head. The two are so different and so fun to have helping me with chores every day and keep me company.

You could try what I have heard called a poop hammock? It is a fabric/tarp poop catcher you can carry out and dump
Yes! That's what we do. We have the ladder/tiered roost- and it rests on a shelf (poop tray) and the whole tiered roost lifts up. It's about 2 feet off the ground. Under the shelf is a brooder area that I can remove the door from. Right now I have a broody hen in it so that she's left alone. I put the chicks in it early in the year so that they are separate- but everyone can see everyone so that the transition of joining them all together is smoother. All the poop falls from the roosts to the shelf below. The shelf has a tarp that goes over it. We take the tarp out and shake it. Used to do newspaper- what a nightmare!!
