Is there any truth to the adage that you will either have cats or coons, not both. They don't co-habitate? I had coons in my shed when we moved in, I trapped them all then we started seeing feral cats around. Then our kittens showed up in the barn and have been around since. Have seen a coon or skunk since

I don't know about that, but I know skunks will walk right in and eat cat food with the kitties. My sister bent down to pet some of the barn cats once then realized, "That's no cat!!!!" I swear I would have wet my pants laughing to see that. She actually about wets herself telling the story.

My family likes to tell stories and laugh, it is the best thing about it. And we can look back at tragic things we have gone through and still find the funny stuff in it. We are basically teetering on the edge of insanity.

In my experience no truth to it. Find yourself a good neighbor with coon hounds.

No truth at all. I have alot of barn cats and the coons still come around. I friend of mine once had a coon move into her cat house with the cats, they kept to their seperate corners but still the same shed.

I have my own coon hound and 2 of my closest neighbors have all gotten coonhounds in the last month. A whole lotta cute floppy ears in the 'neighborhood' now I'm a sucker for hounds.

I might have to set my live traps and see if I get anything this spring. Probably will just catch my cats lol. In my experience if I trap a cat once it will not go back in the trap a second time so I just have to keep setting jt

Honestly, I haven't seen a racoon around here in ages. With the chicken killer next door and mine, they stay away.

If the neighbor dog is a hunter (like he was with your hens) chances are he could be thinning down the coon population.

As a typical guy I take the opportunity to relieve myself around the farm in hopes that will deter unwanted animals from coming around

Duane Urch free ranges his birds in Summer and Fall. I asked him once how he keeps them from predators? He said, "Get yourself a Black and Tan Coonhound and they won't let anything come around." Personally, I don't like the sound of a coonhound baying, so I skipped that and put up fences.
You on the other hand, probably did yourself the best favor and didn't even know it!

I suspect that is the case. But I do like coonhounds
