Minorca thread!

Dan, 12 lbs would definetly be some large Minorcas! But I am sure they would be gorgeous.
I am finding the book very interesting reading. Tell me more please about what you have compilated...
How many Black Minorcas do you still raise Dan?

Dan would probably be able to comment on this, but I think Richard Shock had a few males that were probably pushing 9 or 10 pounds. I got a trio from him one year and had a male that was about 7 pounds at 8 months old. My dad's dog killed him off and I got rid of the Minorcas. I look forward to raising them again one day, but for now I will stick with what I have in the Wyandottes and Faverolles.

I took these pictures at the German National show in Frankfurt in Dec. They are all birds of this year.I was impressed with them. They were very big chickens.

I'm still deciding what breeds to settle on, so I've ordered several new breeds this year to "try on for size." I have 5 Black Minorca chicks coming from Sand Hill. Even though they will not be show quality, I'm sure, does anyone know if they are still pretty good representatives of the breed in general with personality and all?

I was reading on this thread and saw a mention of lavender Minorcas.

: Are there any other colors I don't know about in Minorcas? All I know of is black, white, buff, and now lavender.

I'd love to see pictures of the lavenders!

I have never seen nor heard of Lavender Minorcas. Blacks are the most common with Buff behind those and then Whites being the most rare.
I would love to get a hold of some RC Blacks or some Whites if I could ever find any.......maybe Im not looking in the right places...haha

Sand Hill has whites as well as black and buff. Yes, they are a hatchery, but I've been told that for certain breeds they aren't bad. (I don't know if Minorcas are on of those breeds or not.) I kind of look at them as halfway between a hatchery and a breeder.

What happens if you interbreed the colors? Do you just get a black that has a gene for buff, for instance, or do you get a murky color in between? Sand Hill says their Buffs aren't as big as their Blacks, so I was wondering about increasing size by breeding them together.

I think you would probably get a Black Tailed Red if I was going to guess about if you crossed the two varieties.
I have seen that Sandhill has some Minorcas but I would like to find some from a Breeder if at all possible.....
