Minorca thread!

I am in trial and error mode. I want to select birds of correct size and egg laying ability. I have limited resources for this breed in the Wisconsin area, so have found the two establishments in Iowa from which to get stock from. I love this breed and have noticed through my own experiences that perhaps the breeding stock isn't handled so intimately as my birds are. Therefore, through genetic tendency, the chicks are flighty and screechy. I have found that they do tend to calm and tame as they get older. And they lay awesome, large white eggs that we sell as Organic.

Looks like the feathers are turning more black on the orange zipped chicken. Here is the weekly update:

I've just acquired a few Minorca chicks, - 5 black and 2 blue. (the two colours are not related)

I love them and would love to keep on a breeding set.

Can you put blue to black? Or is it best to keep black to black and so on?

Would blue to black give a mix of blue chicks and black chicks? Or some weird combinations not really desirable?

Any advice would be great!! x

The Blue/Black/Splash genetics would come into play.

This is especially well documented with the Blue Andalusian (which apparently used to be called the Blue Minorca I have read but has differences in the breeds).

Keep in mind that I have only read and I have not bred.

Blue x black = 50% black, 50% blue
Blue x blue = 50% blue, 25% black, 25% splash
black x black = 100% black
splash x splash = 100% splash
splash x blue = 50% splash, 50% blue
splash x black = 100% blue

This is called partial dominance. So all 3 the colors are pure.
But you can have blues that are almost splash in color or almost black in color.
So I think there are more then 2 genes that the colors are depending on. (hard to explain in a foreign language)

Thanks! That was really helpful, :)

I was also wondering, are the blues like some kind of top secret thing? hahaha I have searched high and low online and cannot really find
anything about them, or anyone selling them for that matter!?

No almost every chicken breed exist in the black and blue variant.
But as far as I know I am the only one with blue Minorca bantams on this planet.
The standard blues are a bit more common.
