Miracle duckling survived black bear attack (so far!)... (graphic pic)

About two weeks ago my dog attacked my 5 week old mallard. The mallard was acting fine, but I was crying like a baby. The dog took out a very large chunk of meat and the duck's jugular and esophogus were both exposed. The vet gave us oral antibiotics and a spray stuff to give the duck twice a day. Now the duck is doing fine and living on our back porch.

Goodluck with your baby.

Thank you all for your sweetness and encouragement! This little duckling has made huge strides in the past couple days!! (Quite literally, actually!)

One of our biggest worries was the fact that she wouldn't use her left leg at all (wouldn't even try to move from a lying down position), but we figured: a) it probably hurts like a son of a gun, b) it could be broken (even though I couldn't feel anything out of place) and c) she probably didn't have much energy given the fact that ducklings are going through HUGE growth spurts on top of the fact that her body is trying to heal this injury! So we thought we'd just give it time and see what happens...Well yesterday she started scooting around the crate using her good leg and slightly pushing with the left. Then later in the day I was holding her, just giving her snuggles (she actually took a little nap in my arms-so sweet) but then she started preening herself so I thought it would be a good time to try her in some water (we'd been trying to keep the wound dry per vet instructions). SHE LOVED IT!!! I supported her in my hand but let her float ever so slightly and she preened and splashed and blew bubbles-it was like the life was just oozing back into her! So this morning I check on her and she not only stood up on her own (on both legs) but took a couple steps. She's got a huge limp, but it's great progress!! More water therapy later today!!

Ours was the same way, wouldn't/couldn't walk over time it did and now walks totally normal.. wound was in a similar area. Time is a good friend with these types of injuries, you cannot even see where ours was caught anymore.
