Miracle duckling survived black bear attack (so far!)... (graphic pic)

She is doing better than I had ever hoped!! She is active, eating like the growing little bugger she is, healing beautifully (without any sign of infection!!) and loves attention! I have to admit-I've gotten completely attached to her and spend most of my days off just sitting on the floor with her, letting her swim in the sink or letting her sit on my lap (actually she prefers up by my shoulder!) and she just peeps and peeps when she's alone! This weekend I think we are going to bring her two duckling "siblings" in from outside and create a temporary indoor coop for them so that she won't be so lonely. I think we'll start off by keeping her in her crate and just putting her near the other ducklings and then put them all together once her leg is doing a bit better. They want nothing to do with humans so I worry about them trampling her while trying to run away from us, and since the bear attack they've outgrown her by a bit, but I think (hope) that in the long run it'll make the transition to back outside go easier if they go back out as a flock instead of just one solo duck...and maybe, just maybe the two other ducklings will get more accustomed to us human-people and be less fearful and more sociable!

(It's going to be hard working my 12 hour shifts the next 3 days and not getting to spend time with my little Bear!!)

Most definitely will watch for it!!! That's one of the reasons I want to bring them inside, they've only been separated for a week, so I am hoping the less time apart, the more likely they'll be able to re-connect as a flock...Got my fingers crossed!!!

First off, I must say I am so impressed with the "family like" atmosphere of these boards-you all have been so supportive and concerned for our little Bear and it warms my heart!

Bear is doing great! In the picture you can see that the large scab that was covering her wound has started to fall off bit by bit and it is healing really well! She even has new feathers starting to grow!! She had really started to act lonely (just peeping and peeping!) so we brought in her two duckling siblings and built a makeshift indoor area for them so they could all be close, but still give Bear a protected area where she wouldn't get trampled! Bear literally ran in circles the first time she saw her siblings! (Didn't know she could run on that gimpy leg of hers, but she did!!) Her siblings have outgrown her by quite a bit so I am worried about her getting picked on, or not able to get enough food when we put them all in the same coop, so we've been waiting a few days to let her get stronger before we take that next step-but I think we're close to being able to make the "reunion" complete!
(You can see the blue kiddie pool in the background...that's where the other two ducklings are, with a wire fencing around it, so they can see each other and nibble and peep/quack at each other!)

Thanks again for all your concern and well wishes!!!

I look at her and see miracle, to be able to survive a bear attack. So happy to hear she is healing so well. I know she will be happy to be with her sibs, your doing the right thing by going slow. All the best.
