Miracle- Hello! guinea/chicken crossbreed

Thanks for the update M.

It sure was a hard winter. We lost quite a few birds this time around. The flock is getting older and I have not replaced a hen for some time. Guinea friends are doing just great. They are such a hardy bird, even in the cold.

The Guineas on our farm are RUNNING hard and FAST to catch the new bugs and sprouts. They especially like the molassis oats that the new mini colt is getting. He drops a lot of his feed and every one is in waiting for his feed time.

It is like old times again. The barn door slides open and darn near every one comes running and flying out. So good to have nice days and warm nights.

That is eggxactly what I was thinking as I was reading the last entry that Miracle sent us. Mena, you gotta do this, you will be the best thing to hit the Children's book shelves in a long time, maybe even since Peter Rabbit.

Hi Miracle,
It's me Bella or as I am known now after visiting the doctor yesterday Bellarus. I am a big city cat now and have 2 step brothers and one sister.
Meeko and Jack are very nice to me, but Jill gives me the stink eye a lot. It was a long trip inside the goose and we passed by a lot of fields and cities until we arrived here in Chicago. I stayed awake most of the time with just a couple of cat naps. There was a lot of white stuff all over the ground when I first arrived but it is now gone.
I hope you are going into the coop at night, we were all very scared when you didn't come home. It made us sad worrying about you.
Also, remember to go into the special hiding spot in the coop that Mena made for you, if the others are being bullies to you. Stay strong.
Oh there goes Jill maybe I should jump on her again, I am sure that I will wear her down sooner or later. Oh ouch, I am still a little sore I had some shots to keep me healthty

and a few things snipped. Tomorrow will be a better day. The doctor called today and asked how I was feeling and said I was a very sweet kitty. I miss running in the fields and all the animals, but I do have a nice soft bed here and lots of places to play hide and seek.
You take care of yourself and keep writing your tales.
Bellarus and family

Hello from Miracle,

I saw something funny yesterday and wanted to tell you. Sometimes when I go in the coop during the day I see things that the golden girls do. They don't pay me any attention so I just hide and watch them. Chickens can be so silly. There are 5 nest boxes in the coop for the girls to choose from when they feel like laying an egg. Beulah was on the nest working really hard to get the egg out. Sweetie came in to lay her egg but she wanted to lay it in the nest that Beulah was using. There were 4 empty boxes but Sweetie wanted THAT one. Sweetie walked back and forth in front of Beulah. She clucked to her "Beulah, I need to lay my egg and I want to put it in THIS box. Please hurry. I can't hold it much longer. Oh, Oh, Oh, come ON Beulah. What is taking you so long. You are stalling. I know you are. "

Sweetie even tried to fit herself into the nest with Beulah but there wasn't room. She preened Beulah's feathers and clucked to her softly but Beulah wouldn't budge. Sweetie couldn't hold it any longer so she got into the nest next door to lay her egg.

The guinea girls are confused about where to put their eggs. The nest boxes that the chickens use are nice and soft but simi private. There is just something that feels wrong about chicken nest boxes to them. They get in the boxes and sit there this way and turn around and sit that way. They put their heads in the darkest corner of the box but still, something isn't right. Mena is afraid they are going to hide their nests in the woods. If they do that Mr. Fox might eat them! My guinea relatives like to lay their eggs in secret nests in wild places. Chicken nest boxes are not their favorite things but they are thinking about using one.

Still, nobody knows if I am a hen or a rooster. They guessed wrong about Bella but now they know that she was a he all along. I knew it all the time but wouldn't tell. I love secrets!

Oh, got to go. It is daylight and the coop is open. Hurry hurry! Everybody out!

Goodbye

Good morning Miracle. Loved your story. Those hens have mighty nice dresses(saddles), I don't think a guinea hen would wear that. Maybe they don't need to. They probably just date gentlemen guineas.

Hello from Miracle,

Today was a hard day for me and my pals. It rained and snowed. We were under the front porch of the barn staying out of the wet when all the big birds decided that is where THEY wanted to be. They chased us away.

I don't like it when they act like bullies. We forgot there were lots of other places we could go to stay dry so we stood out in the rain with our head down feeling really sad. Mena saw us and came out to help. She walked us to the coop and gave us some nice dry feed. It was good to be reminded that there are good places to go when things are not going right.

Tomorrow will be a better day. I'm going to go way out in the field and see what I can find to eat out there. All the big birds go out there and find things. They get really excited. Boss calls all his girls when he finds something tasty. They especially like to follow the horses around for some reason.

Miracle, we had some light snow off and on all day, and a cold wind, it was really icky. I know how you and your friends must have felt. The coop and a dry place to eat must have felt really good. Spring is here and sooner or later the weather will stay nicer and you will really have a great time exploring outside. You will have to keep us posted on any great discoveries.
