I only recently learned that there is a Rural King about 45 minutes from me. I’ve already been and, since they beat the pants off of TSC, I’ve been again. A friend asked me to pick up four chicks on my second visit. They have a six chick minimum. I didn’t know that, but I wasn’t surprised, either, so chicken math and I took advantage of the opportunity to snag two 75 cent pullets for myself. They are older than my 16 five-day-olds but seem to have integrated themselves with no hard feelings on either side. At any rate, I chose them because they were cheap, female and different in appearance from the black chicks I bought for my friend. But what are they? They were in a bin with younger black chicks and the bin was labeled salmon faverolles and cinnamon queens, all pullets. (75 cent faverolles?! be still my heart!) A quick peek told me they were mislabeled. The black chicks appeared to be neither breed and these chicks I did take are much, much darker than the cinnamon queen chick pictures I’m seeing on the internet. None of the chicks had five toes. At this point, I’m just hoping they’re really female! At any rate, somewhere 1-2 weeks old, any breed guesses? I included one my chicks for size reference.
Chicken math, right? At least four and two really do equal six!

I’m going to guess Speckled Sussex on the Brown, and wait and see on the black.
Oh, the black chick is mine! It’s just a mutt. The two chicks both look the same, so I only photographed one and put my small chick beside it to give an age comparison, since I know the age of the chick I hatched and not the one I bought.

Sussex would be cool.

Looks like my 4 week old SS, but is that feathering on the leg? SS don't have that...
