The egg that hatched was marked as a Birchen Maran. The little roo, now 2 weeks old, is still black with a light throat. All the feathers coming in are black. I also got from the same breeder Black Copper maran eggs, although none of those eggs hatched. Also, I do have a little Blue Splash roo, and he was all pale yellow, but is getting a touch of blue in his wing feathers. Can anyone post pics of Birchen babies? Do you think from the description that I could actually have hatched a Black Copper and the egg was mismarked?

I know they can change a lot, but all the pictures of Birchen maran that I've found, sure don't seem black!

They're also the 'untamest' of the bunch. The welsummer babies settle down to being held, as do the banty cochin and giant cochin. But the Marans protest and wiggle and are just unhappy being held at all!

If the breeders were blue then you would probably hatch black, blue and splash. You only get 100% blue chicks if it is a black roo on splash hens. Or some blues can be very dark blue.

Since she marked the eggs with the 3 Marans, I assume they were in different enclosures. It's the first time with Maran, and I didn't know if they go through different molts to get the Birchen part in young roos, and they start looking like mine! It was an ebay bid. The eggs were very light, also. But I'm just a backyard flock kind of gal, and unfortunately can't have roosters anyway! But I have a couple of friends that want roosters for their flocks out in the country, and wanted a better idea of what I really have for their choices.
