I came home yesterday and I’m guessing the neighbors puppies just dug under my fence. My birds free range all day everyday. Anyways I come home and they have her by the fence. Literally trying to eat her alive. I’ve blue koted her better after this picture. What else can I do? I want to try to save her 😭 it’s a lot worse than pictured but I couldn’t get her to let me touch her much.

Sorry for the bad pictures

Clean the wound the best you can then separate her from the other chickens, they will peck at the wound and make it worse. I am not sure but try to clip the feathers away from the wound. keep her in a quiet place so she doesn't startle and hurt herself more. Also whenever you are working on her cover her head in a cloth so she calms down.

Sorry about Miss Caroline.

Could you trim some of the feathers around the wound and post another picture?

After you trim the feathers and post a picture, I'd start by flushing the wound copiously with either saline (homemade if you'd like), chlorhexidine, or dilute betadine. The purpose of this, is to flush out any contaminants out of the wound. Once the wound has been flushed adequate, I would apply a coating of a antibacterial ointment like Neosporin to the wound. Preparation H is one of my favorites as it increases the respiratory comptent of the epithelium, thus encouraging fibroblast growth.

I do see you applied Blu-Kote, contrary to what some people will tell you, it's best not to use it with wounds, mainly because it contains alcohol, which can be quite damaging to the wound, and not only that, it stains the wound purple which makes it quite hard to observe the wounds real color.

Since this is a bite wound, there is likely an overgrowth of bacteria on the wound, and will eventually move to the the rest of her body. In a case like this I would start her on antibiotics. Do you have any on hand, if so what do you have,, and how many pills?

Keep her in a warm, stressful free area, that's away from flies, with feed/water provided.

Hey guys! I took Miss Caroline to the vet today!! It’s gruesome, so bad they wanted to stitch her but where I bluekoted her they didn’t know what was what. But great news, the wounds are looking good! No sign of infection yet, and they are already starting to heal, the vet was in AWE that it was on 2 days ago. It’s just going to take longer to heal without being stitch. That being said she got a extra strong dose of pain meds while there, got put on amoxicillin, and an anti inflammatory/pain med, and some ointment for the wounds. She’s due back in 2 weeks to check the progress of her healing. This was a desperate situation, I’m sorry it took a minute to check back. I couldn’t take chances with my sweet girls life. I appreciate everyone’s advice(and I myself have treated gruesome wounds before with success) but this was just too much. This picture is the reason I ended up taking her in. I guess Caroline is breaking Duck rules, apparently ducks can’t show emotion but tell me these aren’t tear marks? And I literally caught her crying when they was examining her wounds at the vet too they was streaming down her face and beak 😭

I wish we could post videos! She enjoyed her visit from her besties tonight! She’s currently eating and guzzling down water in her hospital cage. She’s doped up on the shot they gave her at the vet. I’m so glad my sweet girl is getting some relief! She should feel pretty ok until she heals! The vet prescribed extra anti-inflammatory and antibiotics incase I need them again later down the road also!

To post a video, you have to upload it to a video platform like Youtube or Vimeo first, then copy/paste the link here.

Out of curiosity, what pain medications, and antibiotics did the vet give, and at what dosages?

Here is what she was prescribed!
