Miss Hope, my newest member to my Pekin flock started laying eggs on Christmas Eve morning. All started as normal, she laid that 1st one with the waxy brown tent that was perfectly round. Then a couple of days later she a whopper of an egg. She would then lay a soft shell then the next no egg. You know working those kinks out in the egg machine. This is not my 1st with a new layer, so I was letting her system figure it out. Things kept happening like this for over a month. No big deal. So I was reaching the month and half mark, I started to get concerned. I start giving calcium gluconate for a couple for days, orally. Not much changed, but I did notice diarrhea so i stopped with that. Now she was laying soft shelled eggs almost every day, at 5 PM unlike her sisters at 5 AM. Sometimes twice a day she would plop out 2 soft shelled eggs. I decided that i would go with my calcium pills i had on hand and try that route. dissolve the 2 pills (almost 600 mg of calcium together) in warm water mixed with peas. This worked great on my other hens. Slight change happened. i did see more eggs that were produced with a harder shell but could easily brake if tapped on. Progress was happening, slow but happening. This past week Miss Hope laid what could be the most strange looking egg. Mind you not, I am still in winter and this was frozen when i cam out at 5:30 AM.
While reading on another post, @Animal family , she was going through the same thing. Egg Lash....Yikes! This prompted a call to my vet ASAP! I sent the video in to my vet and scheduled an appt for this past saturday.
My girl Miss Hope has a reproductive infection and inflammation. How does this even happen??? she was given Cholorphinical @ 250 mg twice a day and Rimydal 1.5 ml twice a day. for 14 days. But here is a great video of the lash egg once i opened it at the vet.
Hopefully Miss Hope is on the road to recovery.
