Hey all!
My pekin, Honey, laid a misshapen egg this morning. She’s only ever done this once before. I googled what this means. Should I be concerned? She’s only ever done it twice.

My duck Nettle lays crazy lopsided huge misshapen eggs every single time, and she always has. I worry, of course. I take her to the vet for yearly check-ups, so I brought an egg to the vet along with a regular duck egg for comparison. Our avian vet told me that she likely has a defective egg shell gland. She also said that oddly shaped eggs are more likely to become egg bound or cause other problems like egg yolk perontitis, so I should just pay attention for symptoms. Our vet didn't recommend doing anything proactively that we aren't already doing. So, just provide a healthful diet with access to extra calcium, ect.

However, Nettle has NEVER been egg bound, even though she's 6.5. When she was younger she pumped out a deformed egg every day all year around, but now she takes the fall and winter off. My other normal sized egg laying ducks have had significantly more serious reproductive issues than Nettle. And since your duck has only laid two odd eggs I suspect you have less to worry about than I do.

Thank you so much! This is very reassuring. I’m so sorry! I hope your duck is okay!

It is different for some ducks. Take the egg and the duck to the vet. It could lead to something bad of you don’t.
I might if she continues to lay them. She’s pretty regular, one every morning. She stopped for two days when it suddenly dropped below freezing. But it’s now back in the 60s and she’s laying normally again. It’s her first year, and we occasionally have a soft shelled egg. But overall she lays beautiful eggs!

Hi, yes it may cost money but if you want to make sure your duck is ok you should bring it to the vet, my duck got very sick from a egg like this. If you don’t think it is necessary then that’s ok!
