A padlock is the best thing right now until you are sure it wasn't human hellions. Raccoons, as far as I know, haven't figured out lock picking yet.

If you discover it is raccoons, a locking carabiner, found at any hardware store, will thwart raccoons and you don't need to worry about misplacing the key.

It wasn't me that had one disappear. It's only my precaution in protecting my flock.
