So, I decided to take the chicks out to play in the yard for a little bit. Gathered them all up in a laundry basket for transport, grabbed my book, went to grab the basket and something just didn't seem right. Counted the chicks and sure enough, one was missing! One of the little BTW Japanese banties was clearly not there! I looked suspiciously at the pug but realized he couldn't have snatched one, gobbled it completely down without a trace and sat back down without me noticing it.

I grilled the other chicks but they weren't talking. I looked back in the brooder, pulled up the puppy pads and stirred up the bedding, but no sign of her. I hadn't left the room in hours, how could she have escaped? The other chicks were refusing to make eye contact with me.

My brooder is a large appliance box turned on its side. I examined it more closely. At one end there is a sort of ledge, created by a long triangle of cardboard glued to the side. I always thought it was solid but, upon closer examination discovered it was hollow and my little baby was jammed up inside!

I finally had to grab whatever fluff I could lay hands to and pull her out. She was unharmed, thank goodness. I suspect hazing and gave the other girls a good talking to before sealing up the opening. I hope they took me seriously.

Bad, bad chickies!

lol, yeah, it was actually pretty freaky to discover she was missing. If I hadn't decided to take them outside it might have been several hours before I discovered her absence, by which time it may have been too late.

Wow! I'm glad that you found her/him! That would have been so sad

if you had not seen her/him in there until too late.

I was worried about that happening with my first set of chicks. I had made my own cardboard box brooder and I had hot-glued some extra pieces of cardboard across the corners because I had heard that they will pile up in corners and kill themselves, but then there was the hollow space behind the cardboard and I thought that maybe they would jump up and into the space--so I stuffed some crumpled up newspaper in there.

When you mentioned your little dog all I could picture in my mind was the old cartoons of Sylvester and Tweetybird and how many times Tweetybird ended up inside Sylvester's mouth.
