Hi everyone, my darling Lucille Ball is miss g most of her feathers from her chest down. She looks like she's been "pluck!" I've looked her over for mites & such but I haven't seen any. She loves her a good dirt bath! Lol She seems to be eating ok and is not lethargic, she chases me all over the yard! She's the only one like this out of ten chickens, I made her an appointment with our vet for next week just to be sure nothing is wrong. Lucy had Rey Neck Syndrome when she was a chick and i cant imagine anything happening to her. I posted some pics of her underside, so if you have any thoughts please let me know. Thanks!! I just went through the same thing with one of my hens! I was imagining bugs all over her, or some weird rare chicken disease and all kinds of other disasters . Turns out everything is just fine ! Your girl is broody or fixin' to be broody:D

Brooding... really? I don't have a rooster! Now where to find a rooster? Or will she move on from this stage? Ugh!!

You need to "break" her ... Broody Jail = wire cage, remove the tray place 1 x 2 welded wire on the bottom, food & water, no bedding and suspend so air circulates under her. Takes a few days but it's for her own good unless you want have the space & her to raise chicks. You could purchase fertile eggs once she starts setting.

The chicken chick has an excellent article on making a Broody breaker, or you could get fertilized eggs from someone else if you want chicks.
Thanks you so much foe the info, I will diffently check this out. This explains why she has been chasing after me more than usual! Lol

Ok now for the "I have no idea what kind of rooster to even consider" question, if I chose to let her brood & hatch. She is an Austrolop (5) & I also have 5 Wyndotes. Is this where I consider getting a (free) rooster for her and then having rooster soup?? I would probably have a hard time with that.

Another option is to buy fertile eggs. You could hatch any breed you wanted.
You'll still have to deal with roosters probably if some chicks are male but that way you wouldn't have to just settle for a rooster. :)
