Wednesday morning I went out to feed my girls and...there were only feathers left. A fox had dug under, pried open the door, and broken open the nest box. Just like that, and both my girls were gone. I don’t know that I’ve ever cried so hard.
Thursday I had a complete hysterectomy, and came home from the hospital yesterday. I was prepared to feel the loss from my surgery (our only children have fur and feathers), but having to come home and see that empty coop is just brutal.
This is my 6th surgery in the past 8 years, and the first in the last 3 that I won’t be using my time off to spend quality time with my girls. Usually, as soon as I’m able to leave the house unaided, I’d spend much of my days outside with them, watching them explore the yard, coming to me for treats and head scratches.
We lost JP (Jean Pierre de Plumage) just after the girls turned one. We had an early heat wave and they hadn’t yet lost their winter fluff. All day at work I prayed they’d be safe, but by the time I got home...it was just too hot for her. Our vet said a lot of people lost hens that week. JP was my snuggler, always hopping into my lap. Her loss was hard, but we still had Henrietta and Gretchen.
Mrs Henrietta Hensworth was my bossy and broody lil’ momma. She was equal parts sweet and sassy, and learned to play the xylophone for treats.
Gretchen Von Peck explored the world beak first. She was incredibly curious - but incredibly skittish! If Beaker were a chicken, that would be Gretchen.
Three years we were blessed with our fluffybutts, and I know I’ll miss them for a long time to come.
