Missing peafowl

Well, that's how I had mine trained or so I thought. They would come into the barn at night or when they wanted to nap. I'm somewhat releaved that they could just be nesting but we have tons of predators(raccoons, fox, skunk, bald eagles, hawks, and the occasional stray dogs). Do you think I should put up signs just incase they ended up on someone else property? I wish they would just make some noise so I know they are okay.
Thank you all for your support and advice. It really helps when your a worried peamom
Come to think of it, one year- it was the UPS driver that made a special trip up my driveway- to tell me that another house he delivered to had a peacock living on their porch staring at its reflection in the storm door. He came all the way back to my house to ask if maybe I was missing a bird. Yes, I was! Got my bird and made a new friend with the neighbor. So, now I band my birds with my telephone # and I keep a plexi glass mirror in their pen. They haven't left home for a few years now. The point being- Make flyers, posters and tell every one including the UPS man!

I want to thank you all for your advice and support! Today I found my peas! Thank god for people posting anything and everything on Facebook. A friend of a friends friend recognized my peas in a picture posted on Facebook. They are in rough shape but time and love will fix that. If someone could please send me the site were I can get personalized bands? They are NOT going free range again for awhile but I'd like to tag them just incase.

Just out of curiosity, how far away were they?

They had been missing for 5 days. I really don't think they could find their way home. They looked thin and dehydrated. But they were very willing to let me pick them up and bring them home.

Yay!!!! So happy for you.
The brass bands I pictured in my thread called ID Bands for Peafowl are the easiest to read from a distance. My hen has had hers on for over a year, and its still shiny and easy to read.
You get them from any Saddlery shop. They are the brass name plates for halters, bridles or saddles. You need one that is 2.5" long for a peacock's leg and a 2" long one for the Hen's leg.
I ordered mine from BIG Dee's Saddlery. The time I went into the store and talked to the clerks and pointed to the one's I wanted in the spinny display- and explained I wanted just my Tel # as big as possible- they came out great. Got just what I wanted- and they made them while I was there. But last year I ordered them on line and not so happy. They are fine and I'm using them, but the longer one is a lot narrower than I like- and the Tel # on the Hen's is small- but still works. I would order it over the phone atleast if you can't go into a tack store near you.

Make sure to FILE the edges and little corner things, as they can be a little sharp-(I just used a regular nail file) then pre-bend it around some thing round (like the handle of a screw driver) using pliers and hammer. Getting it on your birds leg - well you can net them and pin them down and have some one help you- but that would be boring. I suggest doing it at night, all by yourself- holding a flash light in your teethe and sneeking into the hen house with the lights out- ...because they won't move if its dark(yeah right!) and you can bump your head and drop the little brass ring into the golden straw....its fun, really it is!

To Littlemonstir- Big Dee's Saddlery carries a couple choices but the one-that I think is best for the male does not list the size so not sure. But also try Schneiders Saddlery at SSTack.com.
the long plate I currently have for the male's leg because it is 2.5" long is 3/8 " wide. Seems narrow but still ok. I would suggest 1/2" wide if you can find it.
Good luck.

When Peggy vanished, he turned up again about 6 miles away, but he had actually been kidnapped and transported.

I don't really think they can/would travel this far on their own? Do you guys think its possible?

Definitely possible, several years ago in neighboring Lancaster county, somebody lost their 2 male pet Peas. They were named Big Blue and Little Blue, the owners were so distraught they contacted every radio and TV station and newspaper. The one TV station decided to do a story about the lost boys who were repeatedly spotted as they traveled. People would see them and try to corral them or contact the owners, but they would elude all efforts. The news did follow-ups all summer that year and eventually they were captured and returned home. I do not remember exactly how far they traveled, but 12 miles seems about right, I know it was over 10.
