Missing Runner Duck

Oh my... I am so new at this. I feel terrible... thanks for the input. I'll be sure to take the right precautions for the future. The ducks are better off as a small herd then? I am in the process of getting my own house and had plans to get more once I moved. Can you recommend where to get more runners? I loved him SO MUCH!
I know you are sad, I love my flock too and they do free range when I am here. so there is always a chance a fox or stray dog could come around. it's just the choice I have made to give mine more freedom. They are happy. I think if you get another duck it would be happier if it had a friend they like being with their own kind. There are quiet a few Hatcheries that sell Runners Metzers being one of them.,Then you can go on the BYC sell thread and look, or the your state thread. more than likely it will be spring before many will be offering Ducklings but you never know, sometimes Craigslist might have someone post they don't want their ducks any longer and that would be a way of getting some. Sometimes we learn a lesson a very hard way and it hurts to beat the band when we do, you'll be much more prepared and ready the next time. I just wish your lil duck would come walking home to you, I just don't see it happening

Emily Rose, thanks for joining us here.

While you are thinking of it, this might be a good time of year to consider adopting rescued ducks. They aren't as fuzzy as day-olds, but they can be good critters to have around. Many were kept as pets then abandoned. Think about it.

Sorry Emily Rose, for jumping in, but Amiga, where do you find rescue ducks? How would one go about doing that?

There are a very few organizations that rescue and adopt out ducks, but there are also informal networks of people who rescue abandoned ducks here and there.

Here is one I know nothing about, but did find a link to.

http://farmanimal.rescueme.org/Connecticut

There is also Majestic Waterfowl in Connecticut, http://www.majesticwaterfowl.org

Then there is

http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/MA147.html

which I have heard of, but not worked with.

In Tennessee, there is Feathered Angels Waterfowl Sanctuary.

And I heard of Carolina Waterfowl through BYC DF

http://www.carolinawaterfowlrescue.com

Web searches using keywords like waterfowl, "farm animals," rescue, adopt, can turn up some of these. There is also a horse and livestock association in my town, and they are good with helping locate critters. Even Craigslist can be a source.

Maybe this should be added to the sticky Amiga for those thinking of adopting a rescue?

Miss Lydia, that sounds like a good idea.

Ought we to start a thread and cast a net for some more examples before going for the sticky? Or can we update the stickies? Ya'd think I might know these things. . . . .

(unrelated note: I am in the "duckhouse," and Carmelita is poking her head around the corner, against the divider fence, trying to stir the pot. Happy to report no one is taking the bait at the moment.)

That I don't know but I know someone who might, Wynette, I'll ask tomorrow or if you can think of someone else who may know before then. Sounds like Carmelita has an attitude problem.

I think a sticky with state rescue organizations is a great idea. Let me noodle on it a bit - I'm not sure if it would make more sense to have it a sticky in & of itself, or to add it to another. I'll speak with the rest of the Staff and get back with you.
