My husband recently got two hens from a hatcher. One of them is completely missing her top beak. I have been syringe feeding her for a few days but I wonder if I'm just putting off the inevitable. She doesn't seem to get any food on her own and is starving by the time I get home in the afternoon. Is there any hope that the whole top beak will grow back? I can't believe anyone would do this to am animal.

Some people do that to prevent plucking in a large group, i am not sure of weather it will grow back, but i have seen adult chickens survive like that. They just scoop the food they want up with the bottom part of the beak.
But i dont think then can preen, and drinking can be hard untill they figure it out.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your hen. Can you post pictures? When a bird is debeaked the entire part of the beak is not removed, if yours is missing the entire beak it may be an injury or something it was born with.

Sounds like someone clipped off too much ....

Why didn't you take her back and get a replacement ..??????

So sorry about your bird. I am not sure as I have never dealt with this sort of issue. I think you will have to make this decision as to the welfare of this bird.

Good luck and welcome to our flock!

. Yes we should have but she was so skittish the first few days that I didn't realize how bad it was. Then I just felt so sorry for her that I didn't want to go back to the guy that did that to her. I am giving her time now away from the flock so she can eat without competition. I'm feeding her watered down food.

I can understand that ...

This is face now I rarely name my animals unless they earn
one but anyway face was fun into a fence by a Bob-Cat and
this was the end result and now she can only eat watered
down feed from a deep dish ...

This is what the beak should look like ......

Enjoy all your poultry ventures
