So in a few days when my new incubator arrives I'm going to be attempting a mission impossible of sorts...
I'm going to attempt to hatch fertile eggs my Mom has had in her fridge for like 2 months.
Yup, I'm crazy, but we think it'll be a fun experiment. The eggs are mostly from 2 of the hens she lost a few days back to a fox. I went through and did the float test on them all and only a few didn't float like a cork so those are the ones I'm going to try. They still weren't laying down like I would've preferred but honestly what's the harm in trying? If we get some chicks then awesome! If not, well, I made some room in the fridge.
The incubator is a IncuView All-In-One that should be here in a couple days. This won't really be a fair test of it's capabilities but if anything hatches I will definitely be impressed. I've currently got the eggs stored in a chillier part of the house but no longer in the fridge. Any tips or suggestions for this journey?
Dad did slip me an egg from their only remaining hen today to put in as well. It's a RIRxFBCM. The other eggs would be RIRxCochin/Dark Cornish crosses.
I find it humorous that he gave it to me since he spent the whole time I was there getting the eggs telling me it wasn't going to work, nothing was going to hatch and he didn't want anything to hatch as he wanted to start over with all new hens anyway... uh huh. Then why give me the still warm from the chicken butt nugget?
Incubator shipped out this morning so it should be here Monday or Tuesday hopefully. My chances are already slim to none so the sooner it gets here the better. I honestly do not have high expectations for this but it'll be fun all the same.
