Mississippi coast

Hi, I'm new to chickens but not forums. I have been reading this forum for a week or so. I have learned a lot from reading here. I know the value of a good forum and hope i can add to it with my postings.
I'm building a walk in 10 x 6 fenced fortress with roost and nesting boxes for the 10 buff Orpington's I'll order soon from TSC. My cousin and his wife have chickens and I'm hooked now. I have the ground ready and started the foundation. The roof is powder coated aluminum. It a section of roof use to cover a walk way between buildings that i have salvaged. I have been gathering building materials for months. I'll post more in the coop and run.
I hope to be finished in a few weeks. When i get the final design on the roosting box I'll feel better about ordering chicks. I want to be mostly finished so i can put the time in caring for the chicks not building.
Hi! :frow Welcome to BYC! Sounds like a plan. I would just suggest having 6 chickens in that amount of space so you don't have a lot of pecking and squabbling. Just a suggestion. Good luck!!!

Hello and welcome to BYC! The coop sounds great but you might want to make it bigger. You may be able to fit your ten chickens in there for now, however, chicken math is a real disorder and you need to plan ahead for that. If you start with 10 chickens now that will become closer to 20 next year. Plan for fewer, build for more. Good luck and enjoy your impending flock.

No rooster just ladies. There will be a 8' x20' fenced run attached just not roofed, armored and harden off like the 10x6. They can free range the yard when I'm outside. Not going past ten and will likely be less than ten. Ten is the minimum order. Let's see how many of the ten make it to layers.
That will make all the difference. Room for chickens to run! :wee And jump. :ya And squabble. :smack And hide. All in all, happy chickens!
