MissPrissy, butter recipe

I made butter on accident once.
I put some heavy cream in the mixer to whip for a dessert and got a phone call. I was yapping so much I forgot about the whipping cream until I heard "thunk-thunk-thunk" coming from the kitchen.

It was too sweet, so I massaged a bit of salt into it.

Ebay has "Daisy" style butter churns up for auction all the time and they are the easiest non-electric method of churning. We also use a gallon glass jar, place the cream inside, put the lid on tight and then either sit and shake or rock it back & forth (sometimes we would roll it on the floor with our foot). An electric ice cream maker works really well too. They have the plastic paddles similar to a churn and are easier to clean. Just remember NO Ice or else you get Ice Butter.

I have started a butter churn collection but unfortunatly don't hardly ever use them. Shame on me! My Mother used to add a little honey and whip it up really good. Yummy good on toast, waffles, pancakes, biscuts....

I read for a fun kid project to take buttermilk and put it in a plastic lided jar with a marble inside (big one..shooter). Have a kid shake vigorously and hand it to you to shake...taking turns until it turns into butter. Sounds like fun for the first minute but maybe some day we will try.

I live in WI and fresh milk is hard to come by....you need special friends on farms that let yo take it "for cat...pet consumption" Otherwise farmers are not allowed to sell it to you raw.
Sometimes laws stink.

You will not get butter from cultured buttermilk. Sometimes you may see a flake but no big chunks of butter unless using raw milk. Another form of buttermilk is the milk left after making butter.

Butter is made from the cream off the fresh milk. You can use heavy whipping cream from the grocery store - expensive but you will get butter.

Butter is best when the cream is left to sour a little first.

Thanks for the correction of heavy cream. I realized we had 1 1/2c left over heavy cream from making ice cream and it would have gone to waste had you not had a butter recipe up. My husband and I shook the cream for 15 min in a covered plastic container with 3 marbles in it and poof, butter!!! It is yummy and very satisfying. Next time I will put a little honey in it. Thanks again! I love making things from scratch.
