ducks for eating!

don't tell my DD when I said I was getting chickens she was jumping up and down yelling . NO get ducks, yummy yummy ducks. She sees them as roasts running around the yard with orange sauce dripping off their bodies.
I said no I want ducks but for eggs to bake with. I'm afraid if I get some she'll be out there stalking them.

You can have both. I have 19 ducks right now. I will keep the females and 1 male over the fall and winter for eggs. The rest go in the freezer for winter eating.

I would never have the heart to do the killing and plucking, etc. I have muscovies, but I heard that you really have to butcher them at 19 weeks (?) or they are too tough to eat. Is that true with all breeds?

How much does it cost to just take your duck to a place and have it "done" for you? I'd have to do that, I think. I know nothing about raising something to eat it. Guess I'd better learn! I'd LOVE to raise chickens so I could have fresh chicken.

I LOVE duck at the chinese restaurant! I'm a dark meat eater. Guess I've rambled on enough.

Not everywhere will process chickens and other fowl. The place I found charges $3.00 per bird.

I am processing my ducks in 2- 3 weeks. They eat alot right now!! I am holding out to make sure I can tell who is female for sure.

I could probably get 4 or 5 ducks but I only have 9/10 ths of an acre and I already have 27 chicks and I want goats. Not enough room for a pond except my fish pond and they can't go in that. I was going to get 2 ducks and get a kiddie pool for them.

Wild birds use their muscles constantly and thus the meat tends to be stringier; and then their diet of wild greens can add a 'gamieness' to them.

Farmed waterfowl are more docile and put on fat when well fed. They generally are more tender.

But, duck and goose is not chicken. It is a dark dark, rich and filling meat. Either you love it, grow to love it, or can't get over the first bite. I love duck now!

The chickens were great! They are also gone. Beer butt BBQ'd the last one the other day. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town this Friday. How long will you have beef available?

MMMMMM my mouth is watering. We're butching a muscovy drake this weekend ( supposed to do it last weekend but ran out of time )

My 2 appleyards from MissPrissy are growing nicely. No idea on sex yet.

I also hatched 6 Pekins over the weekend and they will be heading to the freezer.
