Mite problem

Hello guys, just a quick question. I have a coop that you can walk into and everytime I walk in, I come out scratching myself from head to toe, and theyre mites. Ive seen all sorts of types green ones, red ones, big ones, small ones and its really annoying. I have been trying to look for the best spray but i am not sure which is most effective. I had this problem last year so I used earth diatomaceous and mixed it with water and used as spray to spray all the walls, it seemed to work but the problem is that it is stained the walls and I dont want to do that again. So what mite killer do I use and which is most effective? Are they brands or only one type? Please let me know. Thanks

You can use Permethrin concentrate then dilute it per the manufacturer's label in a garden sprayer.
You need to remove all bedding and double bag it or burn it. Spray the entire interior of the coop paying particular attention to crevices. Let dry and then put fresh bedding in.
Each bird also needs to be sprayed with the diluted solution. Pour the diluted solution into a handheld bottle sprayer and spray under the vent in the fluff, under each wing, lift up the chest feathers and spray the chest, and under the hackles getting the spray down to the skin in all locations.
Repeat all of the above in 10 days.

In the US they use permethrin. Here in Canada, it is almost impossible to get permethrin, especially as a spray or dust for the chickens. I am in the mist of battling mites myself. I used Malathion to spray my coop. I am doing the third spray tomorrow. Others here have told me it is more toxic to chickens but I just keep them out until everything is totally dry. So far, it seems to be working .

I have never heard of putting DE in water. I thought that water made is less effective. Most people sprinkle it around the coop under the bedding. Another option is sulphur dust. If you have access to ashes (like from a wood stove or bonfire) this is also used under the bedding and spread on the roost bars. It is important to have a spot where the birds can dust bathe. I was told that putting ashes in their dust bath will also help (I plan to do this when I get enough).

Lastly, I was told by the guy at the feed store to use garlic. 2-3 cloves in a gallon of water or 1lb garlic powder in 50lbs of feed. This is supposed to stop the mites and lice from living on your chickens. Time will tell if it works for me.

Thank you very much, I have a dust bath, I mix DE, sand and soil all together and they bathe in that but its different for all chickens

You will need to spray weekly for 3 or 4 weeks because it does not kill the pests eggs so repeat treatments are necessary. Also spray thoroughly because some type of mites will hide in cracks and crevices in your coop so spray everywhere. Good luck...

It wouldn't hurt to spray it down with diluted permethrin.
