Mite problem.

This is my first time dealing with this. What do we use to treat the chickens and their coop area. Also are their eggs able to be eaten while treating? Someone told me Seven dust but I’ve now read that or can cause issues.

In the USA the two useful products are permethrin and spinosad. Here we use permethrin as a spray, and some permethrin powder also. Spinosad is very expensive, using permethrin instead makes sense for most of us.
There's no egg withdrawal with either product, a very good thing.
Sevin is not approved for use on poultry, don't use it. Although carbaryl will work, but it's not okay for the birds, stick with permethrin or maybe spinosad.

Hi! I just learned about Elector psp. I have Monterey Garden Spray Spinosad at my local garden store. I've seen a conversion to use it here on Backyard Chickens. Do you know if it is safe to use on Chickens?
Do you know if it has any harmful ingredients to chickens in the "other ingredients"?

Yes to both, as long as they have directions for use on your birds and their coop.
We buy 'poultry dust' which is permethrin powder labeled for chickens and their coops. And Gordon's permethrin concentrate, which has directions for use on several livestock species and their housing. It's very inexpensive, with a one gallon sprayer, very easy to use.
So far the permethrin has worked very well, so haven't bought spinosad.

Permethrin is toxic for cats at concentrations that other species can handle just fine. Keep cats out of sprayed areas until it's dry!!!
Our cats never invaded the chicken housing anyway, and we are very careful when using any insecticide, they all are bad for non-targeted species.

The Monterey Garden Spray Spinosad does not have instructions for poultry. It is only intended for gardens, so "off label" for chickens.
I see people asking about it here, and haven't really gotten or concluded that the Monterey Garden Spray Spinosad was safe for chickens "off label".

As for that permethrin Katycouts showed, I bought a product off Amazon that was for horses, dogs, livestock, etc... and they sent me that bottle. Which was not the picture they showed on Amazon. But it did have a swine & poultry instructions, so I've been using it. I've also been using the Garden and Poultry dust with permethrin for years (and DE as well). I've been doing all the things I normally do, cleaning coops, bedding, dust bathing spots, dusting the birds throughly, 10-14 days apart, spraying roosting bars, nesting boxes, crevices, floors, everywhere... but these mites are unusually stubborn. So I want to try Spinosad.
I can purchase the Monterey today, but the elector psp is going to take some time to get here.
Just trying to see if anyone has used it or heard of anyone using it.

If there aren't instructions for poultry, sounds like a bad idea to use it. Dosage matters, and so does what else is in it.

And we are fighting mites often, because our chickens free range, and the wild songbirds get into their coop and interact with the chickens. Ugh!
