I know red mite likes to live in cracks inthe wood during the day, only to emerge at night and feast on the chickens as they slumber. To prevent red mite, I have thickly coated and caulked my garden coop.

We have recently taken on a small project of restoring a derelict bit of land, that has stabes made from breeze blocks. We'll be allowed to do as we please with it, so, of course, we'd like to convert a couple into chicken coops. The easy bit is the planning. The question I have is about prevention. Do red mite live in stone as well as wood? Are there any other pests I should think about at this very early stage to get it right?

I know a few of you keep birds in buildings...

I've corrected the title to the correct American word: cinder blocks.
