Mites... Help!!!

lately I've been noticing that my chickens have mites!!! How do I get them off I have no clue:/ I have heard about putting Vaseline on them but how long does it take for them to go away? And what are some different ways to get rid of them?

Where are you seeing these mites?
Permethrin works well for most mites.

You must treat each bird, clean out the entire coop, wash it well, destroy the bedding, treat the entire coop and nest boxes. Repeat the entire process again in 7 - 10 days, depending on the temperature. Do a google search to find out what kind of mites you are dealing with. Most people use Permethrin, either powder or spray. Diatomeceous Earth does absolutely nothing to cure a mite infestation.

Have you used this yourself? I'm' trying to figure out mites, also. In California. We never had a freeze this winter, so mite outbreak this week is massive. Have about 60 chickens, all free roaming. Need to treat over half an acre, can't catch them to treat individally, and they share all their water sources with dogs and cats. Also, have several batches of new babies running around. I drip Frontline on some of the more tame ones. Mites are so bad we track them into the house, now they are on our furniture and in carpets.

I do use both. You're probably gonna need a more serious sprayer if mites are that bad.

Permethrin at the feed store comes in sizes from 4fl ounces to 1 gallon bottles and in concentrates from 10% up to 40% purity and is intended to be mixed with water. Do be warned that Permethrin is deadly for all cold blooded animals and especially those without a backbone like slugs, darkling beetles, snails, honey bees, most fishes, etc etc so watch what your doing. The upside is that Permethrin is permitted for the control of mites on chickens and it is so safe that there are no withdrawal periods required for the eggs of hens that have been treated for mites with liquid Permethrin spray. On the honey bee front Permethrin is permitted for use on the ground under bee hives to control pupating Small Hive Beetles a serious pest of bee hives. So it is hardly the end of the world when you use Permethrin on your flock.

Now your next step is to find out which chicken mite you are battling so that you can employ the most effective strategy to deal with your mite issue.

Back to the safety issue. A natural form of Permethrin is fed to chickens to turn their egg yokes a deep dark yellow color to simulate free range eggs from hens who never gets to free range a day in their lives which is permitted under the rules governing HOLISTIC or natural, or sustainable agricultural production.
