Mites in the yard.

I am having what most feel is a mites issue. They aren't effecting the chickens but drive me and my granddaughter batty with the itches. You can't see them but they are there. I even get whelps on my hands from handling the water hose or picking up things from the ground. The whelps go away pretty quickly over a few minutes but they itch like the dickens.

I need a remedy for the yard which won't hurt the chickens.
 
I don't know. Aren't sand fleas large enough to be seen?

But no matter what they are, I need to get rid of them without hurting the chickens. I'm sure there are plenty of poisons I could use but since the chickens are out in the yard a lot, I think they would get the poison in their system.
 
Lots of bugs down there, maybe @KikisGirls might know?
Anyway, spraying insecticides around food birds not a good idea, IMO.
Maybe spray yourselves with insect repellent?

I figure it's probably bothering them too. Plus, I don't like using bug repellent on a 7 yr old.
 
I'd recommend something like this...that can attach to your hose:
