Mites: I've tried EVERYTHING

You could try getting some washing up liquid and some liquid mite remover and mix it into a big bucket full of water once the have dried get a shallow reasonably sized tub and put sand a bit of lime powder (you can get from your local builders yard) and some mite powder put it all in and they will dust bathe in it and get it all over there feathers and it will get rid of all the mites which were not killed from the other bit

you didn't mention what kind of mites you had. i had a bad infestation of scaly leg mites -- i treated them without any toxic chemicals. neem oil/sliced garlic put in a spray bottle with water and i sprayed the entire inside of the coop, nest boxes, ramp and shavings daily; cedar sawdust and DE mixed in with their pine shavings; cleaning the coop out weekly; bathing the chickens; wood stove ashes put down for dust bathing; and i diligently treated their legs with vaseline every other day. i haven't seen any mites for 3 wks but i'm still keeping up the regimen just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the words of encouragement

, and I have decided to proceed with owning chickens, since my two cats are still alive, healthy and happy I must be doing something right

- so bring on the cluckers! Besides, I'm almost finished with their home, and after many hours of hard frustrating work featuring sunburn, splinters beyond count and other lacerations, and contusions; it would be a silly shame not to get the chickens. I will be posting some pics, as soon as I'm done with the coop, which should be tomorrow - Lord willing =)

Chickens are very entertaining, a great hobby, the eggs are wonderful. They can be work but good work. And, there are the issues. I have a hen now "trying" to die. She is starving to death. This is the "bad" side of having chickens; having any animal. The good out-weighs the bad. Check into the posts on Chicken Math! I started out with one rooster, then one hen, then 15, then 35, now 50 with 4 ducks! This is a great forum. Most people are very nice and helpful. It is a wonderful resource. Love hearing the personal stories of how people got their chickens and the chicken math posts. I can relate to that now! Where do you live?

Hi Besty57 - Awe, I'm so sorry to hear about your little clucker . I have found that any thing in this life that is worth while usually involves work = ) I live in Whittier, Ca. a suburb of L.A.

Your comment about "trying to die" is a bit alarming. If she really HAS had enough, perhaps you would be doing the responsible thing by helping her toward that goal and not simply allowing her to starve to death which could take weeks? What is it,exactly, that you are seeing that makes you think she is trying to die?

She hasn't eaten or drank in over a week. She is emaciated. I don't want to kill her but will. Have done it in the past out of mercy for my gals but it is always very hard to do. It is always a hard decision but one of the tough parts of being an animal keeper. I always do the "responsible" thing with my animals.

My wife and I have a barred the seemed to be that way. Skin and Bones. He had been sick and we brought him in away from the others. now every time we try to put him out he quits eating. He ok now just spoiled rotten. Will not eat if we put him out with the other birds. But bring him in the house and he begs from your plate along withj the dogs and cat. Sitting next to them. could it be anything like this going on?
