Hello!
Yesterday I noticed on of these elongated brown bugs on my white Wyandotte. After some Google searching, I couldn't seem to find anything this shape:confused:

It is pretty hard to see.
Does anyone know what this might be?
I ran my fingers through the feathers on her neck, and there are several of them lined up on her feathers close to the quill, near the base, but I didn't see any on the skin.

Any input would be very much appreciated!

They kinda look like lice, but not quite.
SO many insects out there, most have very short lifespans and most are not any threat to poultry.

Might want to look closer tho.
Here's some tips, some you've already done or might not apply.

Google images of lice/mites and their eggs before the inspection so you'll know what you're looking for.

Part the feathers right down to the skin around vent, head/neck and under wings.

Best done well after dark with a strong flashlight/headlight, easier to 'catch' bird and also to check for the mites that live in structure and only come out at night to feed off roosting birds.

Look fast, they will scatter quickly once the feathers are parted and the light hits them.

Wipe a white paper towel along the underside of roost to look for red smears(smashed well fed mites).

Good post about mite ID by Lady McCamley:

Thanks for your reply! I'll plan on checking tonight.
They didn't seem to be in a hurry at all, they were just hanging out, and it was very easy to pull one off.

So do you think they might not be a problem?

Your right, kind of does look like that.
I have never had this issue, what should I do to treat it?
I dust mine with permethrin. (It's pretty cheap and you can find it labeled "Livestock & Garden Dust.") You will want to dust them once a week for minimum 2 weeks, but 3 or 4 weeks is what I have done.

You can use an old sock, but I have mine in an old salt shaker and it works well. (Just don't leave it out, or in a stupid place where your sister might put it on your popcorn...:pop)

I found this at TSC, do you think it would work?

I bet that didn't taste good!:gig:gig

Yep! That's exactly what mine is (different brand, same ingredients.)

Thankfully we didn't eat any of it--I realized my sister put it on before we did! Still wasted a perfectly good batch of popcorn, though! 🤪
Thanks so much!
