Mites On Ducks?

I know a dusting powder exists that can be used on them because i own it and have used it on chickens, generally though waterfowl worry me because of them bathing and it coming off into the water...

ANyways, none of mine have but it can certainly happen and i agree with others on the broody beasts being more at risk and those probably housed with chickens.

I'll also agree lol with the poster who said why did the vet not suggest or do anything? Isn't that what your paying for??
Permethrin dust will work too.

The dusting powder "used to be" call Sevin but apparently it's not something you can buy anymore. We used that on dogs and cats for fleas. I don't have that problem anymore but wanted to get it for my garden and now, believe it or not, it's called "Eight"!
Sevin is carbaryl and is still available, but it is not labeled for use on poultry in the US, though some people still use it.

Eight dust is a permethrin based dust, but I don't think it's labeled for use on poultry. Not that it matters, just wanted to point out that they are two different pesticides.

So in your opinion could you use it like Sevin on dogs and cats for fleas? And if so, what about ducks?

I would be concerned some when spraying or dusting ducks with permetherin about them possibly contaminating their water and then drinking the water.
.....and permethrin, and most pesticides, are highly lethal to waterway inhabitants...so the health of natural ponds and streams are at risk if you use them for waterfowl infestations.

Permethrin is toxic to cats, so never use it on cats. If the ingredients are exactly the same as the permethrin poutry dust I think I might use it on poultry and ducks. But why not just buy something that's labeled for use in poultry and use it instead?

ok... so permetherin kills the mites virtually instantly on contact. So if it was me, I'd probably treat the ducks (spray or dust) in the evening, keep them locked up overnight without water, give them access to swimming water in the morning in a pool so they rinse off before heading out into any pond/stream etc. with the pesticide on. This will likely still kill most of the mites on the birds, and be less likely to pollute the waterway. Repeat in 7-10 days for at least 3 cycles (to break the lifecycle of the mites), and make sure to do a full bedding clean and treatment each time as well if they use a coop/house of any kind.
