Mites...Oy!

So, I have these dark colored bugs-very very small ones-climbing on me. I just came in from tucking my birds in. Mites? They look almost like seed ticks, but smaller and they appear to be black. Should I dust myself with sevin?

I can dust the birds and the coop without much fuss, but will they hurt me? My family? My hogdogs?

Last summer was so easy...no bugs, no predators, no snakes. This year I've got it all.

So now I am confoosticated. The treatment for the two types of mites is different. The common one calls for treating the coop primarily, the other kind calls for primarily treating the birds. How do I know which one I have?
