IMO? I love them but they're a lot more work than I ever expected. And they always have issues.

I know your just kidding, the joy of having chickens is so much better than not having them at all, and if you do change your mind I'll rent the coop! A mute swan how cool.........p.s. this is for chickmate

Naw,.. everything good takes work,.. sometimes when we read the forum it's easy to get overwhelmed by all the bad stuff,. but that's because we sit here and take it all in in one reading,.. and you don't my and my family sitting in the chicken yard relaxing and feeding the girls treats,.. it's worth it! Let's not forget EGGS!
superchemicalgirl made it through!

Now,.. I want to see pics of this new coop of yours!!!!

Hey BayouPoules I like your poem, satire whatever it was funny, This is my first time for mites too and I finally did my 2nd and hopefully last treatment for this year. I wouldn't trade all my chickens, ducks dogs nor fish for all the money in the world, I'd just go out and buy more!

even if you kill them off, I'd still find out what they were so you can figure out where they came from and hopefully prevent it from happening again. I had these tiny beetles one yr and turned out they were in a box of dog biscuits I had. once i got rid of that box, they disappeared within 1 week.

I sent my sample to Orono but haven't heard back. I've had the kids in my basement now for 8 weeks. I feel bad for them.

The empirical evidence leads me towards harmless grain mites:
1. No visible bite marks on the kids, despite heavy infestation
2. No bites on myself or boyfriend despite cleaning/burning box
3. Mites upstairs (where there are no chickens... yet) and in/near meal worms
4. Really bad batch of Purina FlockRaiser, which I fed to the kids and more than likely fed to the meal worms.
5. Damp conditions while on vacation

I'm going to put the new kids out tonight into the big house.

*Crosses fingers*
