You could spray them with permethrin, but make sure to DILUTE IT! If it is not diluted with water it can harm your chicken and even kill them. I know this stuff may sound scary, but it works really well, I use it on all of my chickens

Ok all good suggestions. I'm in Ontario Canada. We don't sell most of this stuff over the counter. At least not at the many places ive checked. As for the permethrin, when I google it says commonly called nix. As in the lice nix that we humans would use on ourselves. Is that what you all are referring to?

Not sure about the nix when I looked it up it has Nix Active PERMETHRIN 0.25% Other ingredients 99.75%

I just did a bit of research and discovered that permethrin is illegal in Canada. The ministry of agriculture recommends malathion. Even Canadian tire carries Wilson 50% Malathion concentrate, so it appears to be pretty easy to acquire.

What kind of experiences have people had using Malathion?

It turns out the info is from the ministry of agriculture back in 1957.

I did find out elsewhere that permethrin is illegal in Canada and that malathion is still buyable here.

I rescued some silkies with really bad scaley mites I soaked in very warm water with dawn and used a wash rag to remove all of the damaged scales. I put Neosporin on legs then Vaseline repeating daily. A few had already lost toes but up walking on both feet now. They have other body mites I need to tackle now plus feather loss, any suggestions? I have already bathed them and they are eating and drinking but have a long ways to go to be healthy. Is there something I can do or give to them to i prove there overall health and how to deal with body mites/lice?

@Michelle Farmer-Brown Since that was published in 1957 I would think it's outdated. I have never heard of using Malathion on animals. It may be best to do some more research - you may also want to see this thread - @Wickedchicken6 has listed a couple of products that you may be interested in.

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble. Can you post some photos of the birds, their legs and feet?
If you are in the U.S. you can find Permethrin based poultry spray and dust at local feed stores like Tractor Supply - use this to treat the birds and their housing. Repeat treatment in 7-10days to kill any hatching nits.
If your Silkies are in bad shape, then they may benefit from extra vitamins and protein. Poultry Nutri-Drench added to their water a couple of times a week and a little chopped egg given daily in addition to their normal feed will hopefully give them a boost. You don't mention how old they are, but taking a fecal sample to your local vet to check for worms would be a good idea as well.

The Ectiban that I had posted about in the other thread is available in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba. I cannot confirm if it's available in Ontario. Sometimes Ontario has tighter restrictions than some of the other provinces. I had went searching about a month ago online regarding permethrin products and nix was the only product listed with permethrin. I did an a physical search myself and found the Ectiban in feed stores near to me AND it does have it listed for use on poultry and poultry houses.

As far as I'm aware the poultry dust (Carbaryl) is available for poultry across Canada.
