I noticed the other day one of my chickens had black on her comb. Was wondering if it's mites or something else. And how to treat it. Hopefully it's an okay picture. I can get another one when I get home later tonight.

They were pecked by a flock mate and if it looks like that in winter it is most likely frostbite. Mites usually appear around the vent.

it kind of looks like dried blood to me,and can you wash it off?
They resemble scabs. When I felt some of the smaller spots they were raised. But the larger isn't raised. I haven't tried to wash it off. I assumed it was mites.

Mites don't usually congregate on the comb, it's usually around the vent area and under the wings. It looks like your girl has been pecked by another flock member a few times.
I'll attempt to clean it when I get home tonight. But Is it possible to be the start of fowl pox?

Mosquitoes are the vector for fowl pox. It is not transmitted from bird to bird.

Only way to prevent it is to immunize every year.
